Biography

Short Description

Francisco Martín Fernández de Posadas was born on 25 November 1644 in Córdoba, in Andalusia, then under the Spanish monarchy. He came from a poor family, and the circumstances of his childhood made a religious vocation difficult to pursue. From an early age he felt drawn to the Order of Preachers, whose houses in Córdoba were important centres of preaching and study, but his lack of means led to his being turned away more than once. He persisted, supporting himself by modest work in the city, until he was at last admitted to the novitiate, professed vows as a Dominican friar, and was ordained to the priesthood. His subsequent career unfolded almost entirely in the Dominican milieu of Córdoba and the surrounding region of southern Spain.

Once a priest, Fernández de Posadas gained a wide reputation as a preacher. He was credited with a popular, fervent style that drew large congregations, and some of his hearers compared him to Saint Vincent Ferrer, the celebrated Dominican missionary of the late Middle Ages—an honour that, according to the tradition of his life, caused him embarrassment rather than satisfaction. He gave particular attention to teaching Christian doctrine to children and to people with little education, spent long hours in the confessional, and visited the sick and those in prison. Several times he was proposed for appointment as a bishop; he refused, remaining a simple religious dedicated to preaching and the care of souls rather than accepting prelacy.

Those who knew him described a life marked by personal austerity, prolonged prayer, and humility. Later accounts written in connection with his cause for beatification attribute to him mystical experiences, the gift of prophecy, and miracles. He also produced spiritual and hagiographical writings intended for the instruction of the faithful. He is remembered less as a scholar of the Dominican theological tradition than as a pastor and preacher of Baroque Spain, in a period when popular missions, catechesis, and the reform of morals were central concerns of the mendicant orders.

He died in Córdoba on 20 September 1713. Local veneration followed his death. In the early nineteenth century his cause reached Rome, and on 20 September 1818 Pope Pius VII declared him blessed after the recognition of miracles attributed to his intercession. He was not subsequently canonized and remains a blessed of the Catholic Church. He is commonly known as Blessed Francisco de Posadas or Blessed Francis of Posadas; his liturgical memory is associated with 20 September, the anniversary of his death.
