Biography

Short Description

Francisco Pacheco was a Portuguese Jesuit priest and missionary martyred in Japan during the early seventeenth-century persecutions of Christians. He was born in 1566 in Ponte de Lima, in the Minho region of northern Portugal. In 1585 he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Coimbra. After studies and ordination he was sent to the Asian missions, traveling by way of Portuguese India to Macau, the principal Jesuit base for East Asia.

He reached Japan in the first decade of the seventeenth century, when the mission founded in the previous century still enjoyed a measure of tolerance under the early Tokugawa regime, even as political suspicion of Christianity was rising. He learned Japanese and worked among Japanese converts and the Portuguese trading community, later assuming leadership within the Jesuit province of Japan. After Tokugawa Ieyasu’s 1614 edict banning Christianity and expelling foreign missionaries, Pacheco remained in or returned to Japan for clandestine ministry. In the 1620s he served as vice-provincial, coordinating the hidden work of the remaining Jesuits.

Persecution intensified in the mid-1620s. Pacheco was arrested in late 1625, imprisoned at Nagasaki, and interrogated. On 20 June 1626 he was burned alive at the Nagasaki execution ground together with Jesuit companions, both European missionaries and Japanese members of the Society. The public burning was meant to terrorize Kyushu’s remaining Christians. Contemporary Jesuit reports recorded his steadfastness and the encouragement he gave fellow prisoners.

His death belonged to the wave of martyrdoms that largely extinguished the visible Church in Japan by the 1630s and drove survivors into underground kakure kirishitan communities. Accounts were preserved in letters and catalogs sent to Europe. After Japan’s nineteenth-century reopening, the Holy See examined these causes. Pacheco was beatified by Pope Pius IX on 7 May 1867 among the 205 Martyrs of Japan. He is venerated as Blessed Francisco Pacheco and has not been canonized. Jesuit calendars keep his memory on the anniversary of his death.
