Biography

Short Description

Franciszek Dachtera was a Polish Roman Catholic priest venerated as a blessed martyr of the Second World War. He was born on 22 September 1910 in the village of Salno, near Bydgoszcz in what is now north-central Poland. At the time of his birth that district belonged to the German Empire, in the Prussian partition of the former Polish lands. He grew up in a Polish Catholic setting and received a classical secondary education at the gymnasium in Bydgoszcz. He then entered seminary formation, studying in Gniezno and Poznań, the historic ecclesiastical centres of Greater Poland and of the primatial see. He was ordained to the priesthood on 16 June 1935 by Cardinal August Hlond, Primate of Poland, for diocesan service rather than for a religious order.

In the years between ordination and the outbreak of war he worked as a parish vicar, including at the parish of Saint Nicholas in Inowrocław, and later as a school prefect and teacher of religion in Bydgoszcz. That mix of parish and educational work was typical of young diocesan clergy in the Second Polish Republic, when the Catholic Church was closely bound up with Polish cultural and civic life. He was not married and had no children, in keeping with the Latin-rite discipline of priestly celibacy.

After Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, the occupation authorities treated the Polish clergy as a leading element of national identity and arrested large numbers of priests. Dachtera was seized by the Nazi security police and passed through the prisons and camps used against Polish clergy. He was deported to the concentration-camp system in the Reich and was held at Dachau in Bavaria, the camp the SS made the principal place of imprisonment for Catholic priests from occupied Europe. Clergy there were subjected to forced labour, hunger, epidemic disease, and calculated humiliation. He died at Dachau on 23 August 1944. No verified burial place is recorded; remains of prisoners who died in that camp were generally cremated.

On 13 June 1999, during a pilgrimage to Poland, Pope John Paul II beatified Dachtera in Warsaw together with 107 other Poles killed under Nazi persecution, a group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their collective liturgical memorial is observed on 12 June. Dachtera has not been canonized and is not recorded as the patron of particular places, professions, or causes beyond his place in that group of martyrs. He is remembered as a diocesan priest of the Gniezno–Bydgoszcz Church whose death belongs to the wider martyrdom of the Polish clergy during the German occupation.
