Biography

Short Description

Franciszek Kęsy was born on 13 November 1920 in Berlin, in the Weimar Republic, to Polish parents Wojciech Kęsy and Anastazja (née Stempin). His family belonged to the Polish community living in the German capital. In 1934 they moved to Poznań in western Poland. There he finished his schooling and trained as a locksmith, later working in that trade. He became a regular at the Salesian oratory on Wroniecka Street, a Don Bosco youth centre that combined prayer, recreation, and moral formation. He joined the Sodality of Our Lady and took part in the Catholic youth association attached to the oratory. Contemporary accounts describe him as a quiet, hardworking young man of ordinary piety rather than as a cleric or professed religious; he remained a layman all his life.

After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, Poznań was annexed to the Reich. Catholic institutions and Polish youth groups were treated as politically suspect. The Salesian oratory nevertheless continued to draw young Poles. In September 1940 the Gestapo arrested a group of youths connected with the oratory, including Kęsy, on the charge of belonging to an illegal organization. Ordinary membership in a Catholic association was construed as conspiracy and high treason. He was held first at Fort VII in Poznań, a Gestapo prison notorious for brutality, and was then moved through other prisons, including Wronki and facilities in Berlin and Zwickau, while the case against the young men was prepared.

Together with four companions from the same oratory—Czesław Jóźwiak, Edward Klinik, Edward Kaźmierski, and Jarogniew Wojciechowski—he was tried by a German special court and sentenced to death. The five, later known in Polish Catholic memory as the Poznań Five (Poznańska Piątka), were executed by guillotine in the prison at Dresden on 24 August 1942. Kęsy was twenty-one. Before the executions they were allowed to write farewell letters to their families. Those letters, which survive in the documentation of the cause, speak of faith in God, concern for relatives, and forgiveness of those who were putting them to death, rather than of political programme. They were not soldiers or underground commanders; they were young lay Catholics whose religious association had been criminalized under occupation.

Kęsy and his four companions were beatified by Pope John Paul II on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw, within the larger group of 108 Polish martyrs of the Second World War. They are commemorated with that group on 12 June and are also remembered on the anniversary of their death. Salesian and Polish diocesan tradition presents them as members of the wider Salesian family (past pupils and oratory youth) rather than as professed members of the congregation. They have not been canonized. Individual patronages attached to Kęsy alone are not securely documented in standard martyrologies.
