Biography

Short Description

Franciszek Rogaczewski was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest and martyr of the Second World War. He was born on 23 December 1892 in Lipinki, in the Pomeranian lands of the former Prussian partition, at a time when that region belonged to the German Empire. He was formed for the priesthood in the Chełmno diocesan tradition centered on Pelplin, whose seminary educated many clergy of Polish Pomerania. He was ordained a priest in 1918, as the First World War ended and the political map of the southern Baltic coast was about to change. He remained a secular priest of the Latin Church and did not belong to a religious order.

From about 1920 he worked in Gdańsk (Danzig), which the postwar settlement had made a Free City with a German majority and a Polish Catholic minority whose pastoral care was politically sensitive. Rogaczewski served that Polish community as preacher, organizer, and pastor, and he became closely associated with the parish of Christ the King (Chrystusa Króla), which ministered to Polish faithful in the city. In the 1930s, as National Socialism gained strength in Danzig, Polish priests who sustained Polish-language religious life stood in growing opposition to German nationalist pressure. His public ministry therefore combined ordinary parish work with the defense of a threatened national and religious minority.

When Germany seized Danzig and invaded Poland in September 1939, Polish clergy in the city were among the first arrested. Rogaczewski was taken by the German authorities at the outbreak of the war, held in detention in Gdańsk (including the Victoriaschule prison used against the local Polish elite), and imprisoned in the camp system, notably Stutthof, which was established near the city in the first days of the occupation. Polish priests were targeted as leaders of national and Catholic life. After years of imprisonment he was killed on 11 January 1943, at the age of fifty. Contemporary and later accounts locate his death in Gdańsk or in the Stutthof camp complex; the precise execution site is not described with complete uniformity, but his death under Nazi imprisonment is not in doubt. The Church judged it martyrdom suffered in hatred of the faith and of his priestly service.

Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw on 13 June 1999 together with the group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their common liturgical commemoration is 12 June. Rogaczewski has not been canonized. He is venerated as a blessed martyr of the Roman Catholic Church and is remembered above all with the Polish Catholic community of Gdańsk and with the clergy murdered under German occupation. Surviving documentation is fuller for his Danzig ministry, arrest, and beatification than for every early curacy or for a marked burial place, which remains unknown.
