Biography

Short Description

Franciszek Rosłaniec was a Polish Roman Catholic priest, biblical scholar, and martyr of the Nazi occupation of Poland. He was born on 19 December 1889 in the village of Wysokie Koło, in the Puławy region of what was then Congress Poland under the Russian Empire. Formed in a strongly Catholic rural milieu, he entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Warsaw and was ordained a priest in 1914. After ordination he was sent for specialized studies in Sacred Scripture, including work in Rome at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, the principal Catholic center of biblical scholarship. Those studies prepared him for an academic vocation in the restored Polish state after 1918.

In the interwar Second Polish Republic, Rosłaniec joined the Faculty of Theology at the University of Warsaw, where he taught New Testament exegesis and related biblical disciplines. He belonged to the generation of Polish clergy who rebuilt Catholic higher learning after more than a century of partitions. He published scholarly work in biblical studies and was known as a serious exegete rather than a popular preacher. He also held the dignity of canon of the Warsaw metropolitan chapter, combining university teaching with a place in the diocesan structure of the capital. His public life in Warsaw in the 1920s and 1930s was that of a diocesan priest-professor in a Catholic faculty that the German occupation would later suppress.

The German invasion of Poland in September 1939 opened a systematic persecution of the Polish clergy and intelligentsia. Rosłaniec was arrested by the occupation authorities, imprisoned in Warsaw, and deported to German concentration camps. Like many Polish priests from the capital, he was sent to Dachau in Bavaria, the principal camp in which the Nazi regime concentrated Catholic clergy from occupied Europe. In Dachau’s priest barracks, Polish priests were subjected to forced labor, starvation rations, humiliation, and often arbitrary killing or pseudo-medical abuse. He died in the camp on 14 October 1942. Because Dachau victims were commonly cremated, no individual burial place is recorded.

After the war his reputation as a martyr was preserved in the Polish Church. The cause of Polish victims of the Second World War who had died in odium fidei was advanced in the later twentieth century. On 13 June 1999, during an apostolic visit to Poland, Pope John Paul II beatified 108 Polish martyrs of World War II in Warsaw; Franciszek Rosłaniec was among them. The group is commemorated liturgically on 12 June. He has not been canonized. He is remembered as a diocesan priest and Scripture scholar who combined academic service to the Church with fidelity under a regime that sought to destroy the Polish Catholic elite.
