Biography

Short Description

François-Benjamin May is not attested in the major printed hagiographical collections, episcopal fasti, martyrologies, or standard biographical dictionaries of the Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant churches that can be checked from established historical literature. The personal name is French in form: François and Benjamin are ordinary baptismal names in the Francophone world from the early modern period onward, and May is a surname found in France, French-speaking Switzerland, and neighbouring regions. That onomastic profile does not, by itself, fix a century, a diocese, or a state. No reliable source supplies a verified year of birth or death, a place of origin, a place of death, or a burial site, and none of those fields can be filled without conjecture.

No vita, necrology, or diocesan notice that can be cited with confidence describes a religious profession, an ordained ministry, a missionary career, or a public office held by this person. He does not appear among the Bishops of Rome, nor among the patriarchal or catholicosal sees of the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East traditions, all of which are exhaustively listed in published catalogues. No religious order can be documented as his. No feast is assigned to him in the Roman Martyrology or in the better-known local calendars of France and Switzerland, and no patronage of places, causes, professions, or groups is attached to the name in standard lists of patrons. There is likewise no published act of beatification or canonization that names him.

Whether he married, remained celibate, or had children is unknown; the accessible record is silent on family life as it is on ecclesiastical career. Later work in unpublished parish registers, diocesan archives, notarial minutes, or the recently created Wikidata item associated with this name may yet recover dates, parentage, and a place of burial. Until such documentation is printed and independently corroborated, the biographical particulars required by a careful notice must be left blank. The present account therefore records only the extreme paucity of the public historical record concerning François-Benjamin May, and declines to substitute office-taking years, guessed localities, or inferred religious status for facts that have not been verified.
