Biography

Short Description

François Filiol was a French Catholic priest of the late eighteenth century whose brief ministry and death were bound up with the religious crisis of the French Revolution. He was born on 29 August 1764 in the rural commune of Saint-Pierre-sur-Erve in the historic province of Maine, now in the Mayenne department of northwestern France. Surviving records say little of his family or formation; like many country clergy of the period he trained for the diocesan priesthood and was ordained for service in the Laval region. He was appointed vicar of the parish of Entrammes, a short distance from Laval, where he carried out the ordinary pastoral duties of a rural priest—celebrating Mass, administering the sacraments, and instructing the faithful—in the years immediately preceding the Revolution.

The Civil Constitution of the Clergy, adopted by the National Assembly in 1790, reorganized the French Church as a national institution and required bishops and priests to swear an oath of loyalty to the nation. Those who refused, the so-called refractory or non-juring clergy, were treated as enemies of the new order. Filiol, in common with the great majority of priests in western France, declined the oath and remained attached to Rome. After the fall of the monarchy and the onset of the Terror, non-juring priests in the west were hunted, imprisoned, or executed. Filiol continued his ministry in defiance of the law until he was arrested and confined in Laval.

On 21 January 1794 a revolutionary tribunal in Laval condemned a group of fourteen priests and religious to death; they were guillotined the same day. Filiol was among them. The victims—mostly diocesan clergy of the Laval district, together with a Franciscan and a Brother of the Christian Schools—became known collectively as the Fourteen Martyrs of Laval. Their execution formed part of the wider anti-clerical repression that accompanied the Wars of the Vendée. Historical sources treat Filiol almost exclusively as a member of this group; no substantial personal correspondence, sermons, or independent biography has come down to us.

More than a century and a half later the fourteen were recognized as having died in odium fidei. Pope Pius XII beatified them as a group on 19 June 1955. Their liturgical memorial is kept on 21 January, the anniversary of the executions. Individually Filiol remains an obscure figure, honored principally within the diocese of Laval and in studies of the clergy who refused the Civil Constitution. His life illustrates the fate of countless ordinary parish priests who chose fidelity to the Holy See over accommodation with the revolutionary state.
