Biography

François-Isidore Gagelin was born on 10 May 1799 in Montperreux, a commune in the Doubs department of eastern France. He entered the seminary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris), a society of apostolic life of secular priests founded in the seventeenth century for missionary work in Asia. After ordination to the priesthood in the early 1820s he was sent to Vietnam, then under the Nguyễn dynasty. He reached Cochinchina as a young priest and spent the rest of his life there, serving Vietnamese Catholic communities in the missions associated with that region.

His ministry coincided with a hardening of imperial policy toward Christianity. After a relatively less severe interval under Emperor Gia Long, Minh Mạng (reigned 1820–1841) treated the Christian religion as a heterodox teaching and a vehicle of foreign influence. Edicts forbade the faith, ordered the destruction of churches, and imposed heavy penalties on converts and on anyone who sheltered missionaries. Gagelin continued pastoral work in this climate, often in concealment, celebrating the sacraments and supporting local catechists and Christians in the central provinces linked to the Cochinchina mission of the Paris Foreign Missions Society.

In 1833 persecution intensified. Gagelin was arrested and taken to Huế, the imperial capital. He refused to apostatize or to abandon his priesthood and was condemned to death. On 17 October 1833 he was executed by strangulation, a method then used for certain capital sentences. He was thirty-four years old. Missionary correspondence of the period presented him as the first French priest of the Paris Foreign Missions Society to be martyred in Vietnam during the nineteenth-century persecutions, which later claimed many Vietnamese faithful and other European missionaries as well.

The Catholic Church recognized his death as martyrdom. Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 among a large group of martyrs of Annam. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him with 116 companions as the Martyrs of Vietnam (Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions). Their collective memorial in the General Roman Calendar is 24 November. Gagelin is venerated as a saint, a missionary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and one of the witnesses of Vietnamese Catholicism in the age of Minh Mạng.
