Biography

Short Description

François-Joseph de La Rochefoucauld was a French Catholic bishop of the later Ancien Régime, a member of the House of La Rochefoucauld, one of the great noble lineages of the Angoumois. Born in 1736, he entered the Church, the customary career for aristocratic younger sons, and in 1772 became Bishop of Beauvais. That see carried the rank of duke and peer of France, so he belonged at once to the upper episcopate and to the court nobility. He is often distinguished in sources as François-Joseph de La Rochefoucauld-Bayers, from a cadet branch of the family. His brother Pierre-Louis later became Bishop of Saintes; both men would die on the same day in Paris.

His years at Beauvais fell in the last decades of the old monarchy. The diocese was an ancient foundation north of Paris, and its bishop combined spiritual jurisdiction with the temporal privileges of the peerage. Like other prelates of his class he would have taken part in the assemblies of the clergy and in the defense of ecclesiastical rights and property. Surviving popular accounts say little about his personal administration, residence, or writings; he is not remembered as a theologian or a reforming pastor so much as a grand seigneur-bishop of the old order.

The Revolution of 1789 overturned the status of the Church in France. Church property was nationalized, and in 1790 the Civil Constitution of the Clergy reorganized dioceses, provided for the election of bishops and priests, and required an oath to the new constitutional order. Rome condemned that settlement. La Rochefoucauld refused the oath and was classed among the refractory, or non-juring, clergy. After the fall of the monarchy in August 1792, non-juring priests and bishops in the capital were arrested as suspected enemies of the Revolution.

He was imprisoned in the former Carmelite convent in Paris, known as the Carmes, together with more than a hundred other ecclesiastics, including his brother the Bishop of Saintes. On 2 September 1792, during the September Massacres, armed crowds and fédérés broke into the Carmes. The inmates were taken out in groups, given a summary interrogation, and killed in the garden and adjoining passages. François-Joseph de La Rochefoucauld was among those murdered that day, as was his brother. The bodies were buried on the grounds of the convent; remains associated with the massacre have since been kept and venerated at the church of Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes in Paris.

In the following century the Church came to honor those slain at the Carmes as martyrs who had died for fidelity to papal authority and for the priesthood. On 17 October 1926 Pope Pius XI beatified 191 victims of the September Massacres, among them the two La Rochefoucauld bishops. Their collective feast is observed on 2 September. François-Joseph has not been canonized. Apart from his family origin, his episcopal title, his refusal of the revolutionary oath, and his death in the massacre, the documentary record of his inner life and diocesan work remains thin; he is remembered chiefly as one of the episcopal martyrs of September 1792.
