Biography

Short Description

Françoise d'Amboise was born on 9 May 1427 at the château of Thouars in Poitou, in the Kingdom of France. She was the daughter of Louis d'Amboise, viscount of Thouars and prince of Talmont. Raised in a great noble household, she received a Christian education in which prayer and works of mercy were given a large place, and later tradition consistently describes her as inclined from youth toward piety and austerity. In 1442 she was married to Peter of Brittany, second son of Duke John V of Brittany. When Duke Francis I of Brittany died in 1450, Peter succeeded as Peter II and Françoise became Duchess of Brittany. At the ducal court she used her rank to encourage religious observance, to restrain luxury, and to support churches, the poor, and monastic houses.

The marriage produced no children. Peter II died in 1457, leaving Françoise a widow while still in her thirties. As a duchess dowager of high birth and substantial dower, she was pressed to remarry. King Louis XI of France and various Breton interests saw political advantage in a new alliance, but she refused all such proposals and remained unmarried, having resolved to live in chastity and eventually to enter religion. For some years she continued to administer her estates and to exercise charity and patronage while she prepared a complete withdrawal from the world.

Her chief religious work was the introduction of Carmelite nuns into Brittany and, by that means, into France. In 1463 she founded a convent at Bondon near Vannes, bringing Carmelite sisters from the Low Countries; this house is generally regarded as the first convent of Carmelite nuns on French soil. She wished to enter that community herself, but Duke Francis II of Brittany, who had come to power after the brief reign of Arthur III, opposed the loss of her person and revenues to the cloister and made her settlement at Vannes difficult. She therefore promoted a second foundation at Nantes, the convent of Notre-Dame des Couëts on the outskirts of the city. There, on 25 March 1468, she received the Carmelite habit. She laid aside the state of a duchess and lived thereafter under the rule of the order, occupying herself with prayer, ordinary monastic duties, and the example of humility and austerity, without claiming exemptions on account of her former rank.

Françoise d'Amboise died at the Couëts convent on 4 November 1485 and was buried in the convent church. A local cult grew in Brittany and in the Carmelite Order. In 1863 Pope Pius IX confirmed her cultus, and she is honored as Blessed Françoise d'Amboise. Her feast is kept on 5 November. She is remembered as a foundress of the female Carmel in France and as a medieval noble widow who, after marriage and a childless ducal household, embraced the enclosed religious life.
