Biography

Short Description

Francis Michael Duff was born in Dublin on 7 June 1889, the eldest of seven children of John Duff, a civil servant, and Susan Letitia Freehill. He was educated at Blackrock College and entered the Irish civil service in 1908, serving first in the Department of Agriculture and later in the Department of Finance. As a young man he became active in the Society of St Vincent de Paul and in work among the poor of Dublin, including visits to tenements and efforts on behalf of people living in extreme poverty. He was also associated with the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association. Reading St Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort’s True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin marked a turning point in his spiritual life and shaped the Marian character of the movement he would later found.

On 7 September 1921, at Myra House on Francis Street in Dublin, Duff and a small group of women held the first meeting of what became the Legion of Mary, a Catholic lay apostolate organized on a quasi-military model of weekly meetings, assigned visitation, and devotion to Mary. The Legion spread rapidly in Ireland and then internationally. Duff wrote its handbook, which set out its spirituality, structure, and methods of apostolate. He remained a layman throughout his life, never marrying and never entering a religious order. In 1934 he retired from the civil service in order to devote himself fully to the Legion. Under his direction the movement established hostels and works of mercy in Dublin, including the Morning Star hostel for homeless men and the Regina Coeli hostel for women, as well as efforts among prostitutes and other marginalized groups.

Duff travelled widely to promote the Legion and corresponded with its envoys, among them Edel Quinn in East Africa and Alfie Lambe in South America. He was invited as a lay auditor to the Second Vatican Council, one of a small number of lay people so honoured. He died in Dublin on 7 November 1980 at the age of ninety-one and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery. The diocesan process for his beatification was opened in 1996; he is titled Servant of God but has not been beatified or canonized. The Legion of Mary remains his principal historical legacy as a global lay Marian apostolate of the Catholic Church.
