Biography

Short Description

Franz Jägerstätter was born Franz Huber on 20 May 1907 in the village of Sankt Radegund in Upper Austria, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was the illegitimate son of Rosalia Huber, a chambermaid, and Franz Bachmeier, a farmer who was killed in the First World War. Until his mother married Heinrich Jägerstätter in 1917, the boy was raised chiefly by his grandmother; his stepfather then adopted him and gave him the family name. In youth he was known locally as high-spirited and sometimes unruly. He worked the family farm and for a period in the iron industry at Eisenerz. Before his marriage he fathered a daughter, Hildegard, outside wedlock, a fact later openly acknowledged in the family.

In 1936 he married Franziska Schwaninger, a devout Catholic from a nearby village. The marriage marked a decisive turn in his life. The couple travelled to Rome after the wedding, and thereafter Jägerstätter’s religious practice deepened: he attended Mass frequently, served as sexton of the parish church, and was received into the Third Order of Saint Francis. He and Franziska had three daughters, Rosalia, Maria, and Aloisia. After the Anschluss of 1938 he refused cooperation with National Socialism, declining party membership and, according to later testimony from the village, standing almost alone in rejecting the annexation. He came to regard the Nazi regime as incompatible with the Catholic faith and with the demands of the Gospel, a judgment he formed through prayer, reading, and conversation rather than through political organization.

When called to active military service in 1943, Jägerstätter refused to take the oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler. He indicated that he was willing to serve as a medical orderly but not to fight in a war he judged unjust. After detention he was held at Berlin-Tegel and condemned by a Reich court-martial for Wehrkraftzersetzung (undermining military morale). On 9 August 1943 he was executed by guillotine at Brandenburg-Görden Prison. Letters and notes written in prison survive; they show a conscience shaped by Scripture and Church teaching, maintained even when local clergy and neighbors urged him to conform for the sake of his wife and children.

After the war his remains were brought back to Sankt Radegund and buried beside the parish church. For years he was little known beyond his region, and some neighbors regarded his refusal as a needless endangerment of his family. Wider recognition followed in the 1960s through the American sociologist Gordon Zahn, whose book In Solitary Witness brought the case to an international audience, and through essays by Thomas Merton. A cause for beatification was opened; he was recognized as a martyr, and on 26 October 2007 he was beatified in Linz Cathedral in a rite celebrated in the name of Pope Benedict XVI. His widow Franziska, who had supported his decision and preserved his memory, lived to attend the beatification. Jägerstätter is remembered as a lay witness who placed fidelity to conscience and to Christ above the claims of a totalitarian state.
