Biography

Short Description

Franz Stock was born in 1904 in Neheim, in the Sauerland of Westphalia, then part of the German Empire. He was the eldest of nine children in a Catholic working-class family. From youth he was drawn both to the priesthood and to international Christian understanding after the First World War. He took part in Catholic youth circles that stressed peace and encounter between former enemies, and in the mid-1920s he studied theology, including a period in Paris at the Institut Catholique de Paris, at a time when study by a German in France remained unusual and politically sensitive. He was ordained a priest in 1932 for the Archdiocese of Paderborn and remained a diocesan priest rather than a member of a religious order.

In 1934 he was sent to Paris as rector of the German Catholic community, serving German-speaking Catholics in the French capital. When war came and German forces occupied France, he stayed at his post. From 1940 he served as a Wehrmacht chaplain with pastoral responsibility for the prisons of Paris and for those condemned by German military courts. He visited Fresnes, La Santé, Cherche-Midi and other places of detention, bringing the sacraments, consolation, and news to members of the French Resistance, hostages, and other prisoners. He accompanied many who were taken to Mont Valérien and other sites to be shot, and he is widely remembered in France as the priest who stood with the condemned. Contemporary and later accounts also credit him with discreet help to prisoners and their families that went beyond strictly permitted duties. He became known in France as the Archangel of the Prisons.

After the Liberation of Paris he was held for a time as a German national, then entrusted with pastoral care of German prisoners of war. At Chartres, and later nearby, he was a central figure in the so-called barbed-wire seminary (Séminaire des barbelés), where hundreds of imprisoned German seminarians and priests continued their formation under difficult conditions. The project, supported by French Church authorities, was intended both as pastoral care and as a seed of postwar reconciliation between France and Germany. Stock’s health, already strained by years of prison ministry, poor food, and overwork, declined. He died in Paris in February 1948, still in his early forties, at the Hôpital Cochin.

He was first buried in the Paris region; in the 1960s his remains were transferred to the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Rechèvres in Chartres. In both France and Germany he is honored as a witness of charity in wartime and as a pioneer of Franco-German reconciliation. A cause for beatification has been introduced in the Catholic Church, and he is often referred to as a Servant of God, but he has not been beatified or canonized, and the Holy See has not assigned an official feast day or list of patronages.
