Biography

Short Description

Franziska Lechner was born on 1 January 1833 in the village of Edumitz in Lower Austria, then part of the Austrian Empire. She came from a rural farming background and in the mid-nineteenth century worked as a teacher and governess. That work brought her into close contact with the social conditions of girls and young women, especially those who left the countryside for domestic service in growing cities. Rapid urbanization in the Habsburg lands left many such women poorly paid, isolated, and without protection, a situation that later defined her apostolate.

After years of teaching and of seeking a stable form of consecrated life, she settled in Vienna. With the support of the Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Joseph Othmar von Rauscher, she gathered companions and in 1868 founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity (Kongregation der Töchter der göttlichen Liebe; Congregatio Filiarum Divinae Caritatis). The community was devoted to the education of girls, the care of domestic servants, and works of charity among the urban poor. The sisters established residential homes, often known as Marienanstalten, which offered lodging, formation, and practical help to young women who had come to the capital in search of work.

Under her leadership the congregation spread from Vienna to other parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and later beyond it. Schools, kindergartens, and homes for girls became characteristic works of the institute. The community received diocesan approval and subsequently recognition from the Holy See. Lechner served as the first superior, shaping the congregation’s spiritual character around divine love expressed in concrete service to girls and women in need.

She died in Vienna on 14 April 1894. She lived as a Roman Catholic religious foundress, was not married, and had no children. She did not hold papal or patriarchal office and has not been beatified or canonized in sources that can be verified here. The congregation she established has continued educational and social work in a number of countries. A precise burial place is not uniformly documented in the readily verifiable historical record used for this account.
