Biography

Short Description

Fraternus, known in French as Fraterne, was a bishop of Auxerre (ancient Autessiodurum) in Gaul during the fifth century, in the region of what is now Burgundy in France. He belongs to the generation of Gallic bishops who governed their churches in the decades after the death of Saint Germanus of Auxerre in 448, as Western Roman imperial authority in Gaul receded and Gothic, Burgundian, Frankish, and remnant Roman powers competed for the countryside. The principal source for his place in the succession is the Gesta pontificum Autissiodorensium, a history of the bishops of Auxerre compiled by the cathedral clergy in the ninth century from earlier local records and traditions. In that catalogue Fraternus follows Bishop Alodius (also called Elladius) and precedes Bishop Censurius, whose episcopate the same local tradition places later in the fifth century. Fraternus’s own tenure therefore falls in the middle decades of that century.

No contemporary narrative of his life, letters, or acts has survived. Nothing reliable is recorded concerning his family, place of birth, or formation. Later medieval summaries sometimes present him as a martyr who died at the hands of barbarian invaders, occasionally specified as Vandals. That particular identification is difficult to reconcile with chronology, because the main Vandal transit of Gaul occurred in 406-409, well before Germanus’s death and therefore before Fraternus could have been bishop. The martyrdom tradition may preserve a memory of violence in the Auxerre region during the unsettled fifth century, or it may be later hagiographical development. Other liturgical notices commemorate him simply as a holy bishop and confessor. In the absence of a contemporary passion or an early vita, the circumstances of his death remain uncertain.

His cult was and remains essentially local. The church of Auxerre entered him in its liturgical calendar, and he is commemorated on 29 September. Like most saints of the late antique Gallic episcopate, he was honored by episcopal and popular cult long before the centralized canonization procedures of the later Middle Ages; no decree of a particular pope conferring sainthood is known. Details of his burial are not securely attested in surviving sources, though bishops of Auxerre in this period were customarily laid to rest in the city’s principal churches.

Fraternus therefore illustrates both the continuity and the documentary poverty of many fifth-century Gallic sees. Auxerre possessed a relatively well-preserved episcopal list and a strong local memory of Saint Germanus, yet even there a bishop of the next generation is little more than a name in a catalogue, a feast day, and a handful of later legendary notices. What can be affirmed with reasonable confidence is that Fraternus held the see of Auxerre in the mid-fifth century, that he was remembered as a saint by his own church, and that his historical individuality beyond that official memory cannot now be recovered.
