Biography

Short Description

Fray Francisco de la Cruz was a Spanish Dominican friar and theologian of the sixteenth century whose career in the Viceroyalty of Peru ended in condemnation by the Inquisition of Lima. He belonged to the Order of Preachers and, like many members of his order in that century, crossed the Atlantic to take part in the evangelization and intellectual life of the Spanish colonies in South America. In Lima he was active as a preacher and theologian at a time when the Dominicans occupied a central place in the newly founded University of San Marcos and in the religious life of the viceregal capital. Precise details of his birthplace and exact year of birth are not firmly established in the surviving records commonly cited by historians.

During his years in Peru he elaborated a body of millenarian and prophetic teaching. Drawing on medieval traditions associated with Joachim of Fiore as well as on claimed private revelations, he argued that Christendom in Europe, including the Spanish monarchy and the Roman hierarchy, stood under divine judgment and that a renewed church would arise in the Indies. He presented himself as a chosen instrument in that transformation. A circle of followers formed around him, among them other religious and lay people in Lima, and his ideas circulated in a climate of spiritual ferment that already worried civil and ecclesiastical authorities concerned with alumbradismo and related forms of unorthodox spirituality.

The Tribunal of the Holy Office, established in Lima in 1570, opened proceedings against him in the early 1570s. After a prolonged trial in which he was examined on numerous theological propositions, he was found guilty of heresy. On 13 January 1578, in a public auto-da-fé held in Lima, he was relaxed to the secular arm and executed by burning. The event was one of the most notable acts of the Peruvian Inquisition in the sixteenth century and was recorded in contemporary relaciones and in later histories of the tribunal, including the classic account by José Toribio Medina.

Francisco de la Cruz has never been the object of a Catholic cult. He died as a condemned heretic rather than as a martyr or confessor recognized by the Church, and he has no feast day, patronage, or process of beatification or canonization. Modern historians study his case for what it reveals about prophetic movements, colonial religious identity, and the workings of the Inquisition in sixteenth-century Peru. The surviving trial documentation, later published in scholarly editions, remains the principal source for his life and thought.
