Biography

Short Description

Antoine-Frédéric Ozanam was born on 23 April 1813 in Milan, then the capital of Napoleon's Kingdom of Italy, to a French family temporarily resident there. His father, Jean-Antoine-François Ozanam, was a physician; his mother was Marie Nantas. After the collapse of Napoleonic rule the family returned to Lyon, where Frédéric was raised in a devout Catholic household. Of fourteen children only four survived to adulthood. He received a classical education in Lyon and, in adolescence, passed through a serious crisis of faith, which he later attributed to overcoming through study, prayer, and the influence of the Abbé Noirot. He then went to Paris to study law, entering an intellectual climate often hostile to Christianity under the July Monarchy.

In May 1833, while still a student, Ozanam and a small group of fellow Catholic students founded a Conference of Charity in order to answer the charge that the Church of their generation did nothing for the poor. They visited destitute families in their homes, combining material aid with personal contact. Sister Rosalie Rendu of the Daughters of Charity guided the young men in the slums of Paris. The association soon took Saint Vincent de Paul as patron and became the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, which spread rapidly in France and then internationally. Ozanam insisted that Christian faith must be proved by works of charity and that such charity should be personal rather than merely institutional. He completed doctorates in law and in letters and in 1840 was named to the chair of foreign literature at the Sorbonne, succeeding Claude Fauriel. There he lectured on Dante, German literature, and the Christian civilization of the Middle Ages, arguing for the historical role of the Church in shaping European culture.

On 23 June 1841 he married Amélie Soulacroix, daughter of the rector of the Academy of Lyon. The marriage was close and intellectually companionable; they had one daughter, Marie, born in 1845. Ozanam remained a layman all his life and regarded family, scholarship, and organized charity as a single vocation. His principal published works include studies of Dante and the Franciscan poets and La civilisation au cinquième siècle. During the Revolution of 1848 he took part in Catholic journalism, notably through the newspaper L'Ère Nouvelle, advocating a Christian democratic approach that defended both the rights of workers and the freedom of the Church, without entering clerical or party office.

Tuberculosis and overwork ruined his health. After a journey to Italy undertaken in hope of recovery, he died in Marseille on 8 September 1853, aged forty, while returning to France. He was buried in the crypt of the church of Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes in Paris. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 22 August 1997 at Notre-Dame de Paris, presenting him as a model of the married lay apostle, university teacher, and servant of the poor. His liturgical memorial is kept on 9 September. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul remains his chief institutional legacy, and later Catholic social thought has drawn on his conviction that charity and justice belong together and that the laity have a distinctive mission in modern society.
