Biography

Short Description

Frederick of Liège, also known as Frederick of Namur or Frédéric de Namur, was bishop of Liège in the early twelfth century and has been venerated as a saint in the local Catholic tradition of that see. He was a son of Albert III, Count of Namur, and of Ida of Saxony, a daughter of Bernard II, Duke of Saxony. As a younger son of this Lotharingian comital house he was directed toward an ecclesiastical career rather than secular lordship. He became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Liège, one of the principal churches of the Meuse valley and the centre of an important prince-bishopric within the Holy Roman Empire. The exact place and date of his birth are not recorded in surviving sources.

After the death of Bishop Otbert in 1119 the succession to Liège was disputed. One party among the clergy and people elected Frederick; another supported Alexander of Jülich. The contest reflected both local noble rivalries and the wider tensions of the age of the Investiture Controversy. Pope Calixtus II recognized Frederick as the lawful bishop. Alexander, however, obtained armed support and for a time occupied Liège, so that Frederick could not at once take peaceful possession of the city and cathedral. The episode belongs to a well-attested pattern of double elections and force in the imperial church of the early twelfth century.

Frederick’s episcopate lasted only from 1119 until 1121. Later medieval and hagiographical writers related that he was poisoned by partisans of Alexander, and in Liège he came to be regarded as a martyr. Independent contemporary confirmation of the manner of his death is limited, and modern historians treat the poisoning story with caution, but the date of his death on 27 May 1121 is the one retained in liturgical tradition. After Frederick’s death Alexander held the see for several years before being removed from office.

Veneration of Frederick remained essentially local. He was honoured as a saint and martyr in the diocese of Liège, with a feast on 27 May. There is no record of a formal papal canonization of the kind that became standard in later centuries; his cult belongs to the older pattern of episcopal and popular recognition. Little is known of his personal government as bishop, of any writings, or of the precise places of his birth and burial. The surviving historical portrait is that of a noble-born cathedral cleric whose brief, contested tenure and early death made him a figure of regional sanctity in the Meuse country.
