Biography

Short Description

The single given name Frederick, without a surname, epithet, diocese, dynasty, century, or other unique identifier, does not correspond to one verifiable historical person. The name (from Germanic elements meaning peace and ruler) was extremely common among medieval and early modern clergy, nobles, and saints in the Low Countries, the German lands, Scandinavia, and Italy. Standard historical and hagiographical practice therefore forbids assigning birth and death years, places, offices, family status, or cult to an unspecified Frederick; those fields are left blank rather than filled by conjecture.

In Catholic and related martyrologies the name appears for several distinct holy men who must not be conflated. The best-known is Frederick, bishop of Utrecht in the ninth century, remembered as a preacher against incestuous unions at court and as a martyr; his cult is local and his precise birth year is not securely documented in surviving sources. Other commemorated figures include Frederick of Hallum, a twelfth-century Premonstratensian in Frisia, and later blesseds such as Frederick of Regensburg. Each has a separate dossier, feast, and burial tradition. None can be selected as “the” subject on the basis of the name alone.

Secular history multiplies the problem. Holy Roman Emperors Frederick I Barbarossa and Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, the Prussian king Frederick II, numerous margraves, dukes, and electors, and modern statesmen all bore the name. Their lives, marriages, children, and burial places are copiously recorded, but they are different men. No Pope or Eastern patriarch has ever been named Frederick, yet that negative fact still does not identify which Frederick was intended here.

Because the query supplies neither a Wikidata identifier nor a Wikipedia article nor any other disambiguating attribute, it is impossible to state a verified year of birth (as opposed to an accession year), a birth or death city, a religious order, a spouse, children, a feast day, or a list of patronages. Inventing any of those data would violate the requirement to prefer an empty field over an unverified one.

A usable biographical notice would require at least one additional reliable marker: a see (for example Utrecht), a dynasty (Hohenstaufen, Hohenzollern), a death date range, or a recognized cult title. Until that is given, the only responsible statement is that many historical Fredericks exist and that this record cannot be completed from the name in isolation.
