Biography

Frei Damião de Bozzano was born Pio Giannotti on 5 November 1898 in the village of Bozzano, in the municipality of Massarosa in the province of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy. Raised in a Catholic family in rural northwestern Tuscany, he entered Capuchin formation as a youth and took the religious name Damião (Damian) of Bozzano. He made his profession in the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and was ordained a priest in 1923. After several years of ministry in Italy he was assigned to the Capuchin missions in Brazil and arrived in Recife, Pernambuco, in 1931. From that time until his death more than sixty years later he remained in Brazil, eventually becoming a naturalized Brazilian citizen, and identified his life’s work with the people of the Northeast.

Based with the Capuchins in Recife, he devoted himself to popular parish missions throughout the Brazilian Nordeste, especially in Pernambuco, Paraíba, Alagoas, Rio Grande do Norte and neighboring states. He traveled for decades through interior towns and the sertão, often by modest means, preaching multi-day missions that drew large crowds. In popular memory he became known as the Apostle of the Northeast. His preaching stressed conversion, frequent reception of the sacraments, peace, and concern for the poor, in keeping with Capuchin Franciscan tradition. He lived in marked personal austerity and, already in his lifetime, was widely associated with reported favors and healings, which helped make him one of the most recognized religious figures in the region.

In old age he continued to preach despite declining health. He died in Recife on 31 May 1997 at the age of ninety-eight. His funeral attracted great numbers of the faithful, and his tomb quickly became a pilgrimage site. His remains are venerated at the Santuário Frei Damião in Recife. The cause for his beatification was introduced after his death. Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtues, declaring him Venerable, and later approved a miracle attributed to his intercession.

Frei Damião was beatified on 13 October 2019 in Recife, in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu as papal legate of Pope Francis. He has not been canonized. His liturgical memorial is kept on 31 May, the anniversary of his death, especially among Capuchins and in northeastern Brazil, where popular devotion to him remains strong.
