Biography

Short Description

Antônio de Sant'Anna Galvão, known in life and after as Frei Galvão, was born in 1739 in Guaratinguetá, in the Captaincy of São Paulo, then part of Portuguese Brazil. He came from a large, devout family of the Paraíba Valley. His father, Antônio Galvão de França, was a merchant of Portuguese descent who held local civic office; his mother, Isabel Leite de Barros, belonged to a landowning family. Raised in regular Catholic practice, he was sent as an adolescent to study at the Jesuit college of Belém in Cachoeira, Bahia. That course of studies ended with the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Portuguese territories in the late 1750s. He then sought a religious vocation among the Franciscans rather than the Jesuits.

In 1760 he entered the novitiate of the Order of Friars Minor at the Convent of Saint Bonaventure in Macacu, in the captaincy of Rio de Janeiro, taking the religious name Anthony of Saint Anne. He made profession and was ordained a priest in 1762. Assigned to São Paulo, he served as preacher, confessor, and conventual official. He became the principal founder of the Recolhimento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Luz, a community of Recollect Franciscan women. He drew the plans for its church and convent, oversaw construction, and spent decades as chaplain and spiritual director of the house, later known as the Mosteiro da Luz. The complex remains a major colonial religious monument of the city.

Frei Galvão acquired a wide contemporary reputation for austerity, prayer, and charity. The people of São Paulo and the surrounding region sought him for confession and for intercession in illness. He distributed small rolled papers inscribed with a brief Latin invocation of the Virgin Mary; these “pills of Frei Galvão” became a lasting popular devotion, especially among women hoping to conceive or to carry a pregnancy safely. He also composed a mystical text known as the Cântico de Amor, in a Franciscan and Marian key. He remained at the monastery through the late colonial years and the proclamation of Brazilian independence in 1822.

He died on 23 December 1822 at the Monastery of Light in São Paulo. Local veneration at his tomb began soon afterward. After a formal process he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1998. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him on 11 May 2007 during an apostolic visit to Brazil, at a Mass in São Paulo, making Galvão the first person born in Brazil to be declared a saint of the Catholic Church. His liturgical memorial is kept on 11 May. His relics are venerated at the Mosteiro da Luz, which remains a religious house and a place of pilgrimage.
