Biography

Short Description

Saint Fridianus, known in Italian as San Frediano and in Latin sources as Frigdianus, was a sixth-century bishop of Lucca in Tuscany and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. Medieval hagiography presents him as an Irishman, often as the son of a king of Ulster, formed in the monastic schools of Ireland, ordained to the priesthood, and then gone abroad as a pilgrim. He is said to have settled as a hermit on Monte Pisano, in the hills above the Lucchese plain, before being called to the episcopal see. No contemporary Irish or Italian document confirms his birth, parentage, or the year of his arrival in Italy. The royal Irish origin is a conventional motif of later legend, though an association with Ireland (the people then called Scotti) is firmly established in the medieval cult and in standard ecclesiastical reference works. His early life therefore remains historically obscure outside that tradition.

Tradition places his elevation to the bishopric of Lucca in the third quarter of the sixth century and sometimes links his consecration to Pope John III, who reigned from 561 to 574. Lucca then lay in a region unsettled by the Lombard entry into Italy from 568. As bishop, Fridianus is credited with the pastoral care of clergy and people, with the founding or restoration of churches, and with missionary work in the surrounding countryside. The sources portray him as a monk-bishop in the ascetic manner of his age rather than as a member of any later named religious order. Surviving accounts do not record a wife.

The episode that most defined his later fame is the miracle of the river Serchio. When floodwaters threatened Lucca, he is said to have taken a rake or hoe, marked a new course for the stream, and caused the river to follow the path he had traced, sparing the city. The story is legendary in character and cannot be verified as a historical event, but it became the usual subject of his iconography in Tuscany and underpinned local devotion to him as protector of Lucca. He is also associated in local memory with rebuilding ecclesiastical life after disruption and with the conversion of people in the Lucchesia, though the details of that ministry are known only through later vitae of uncertain date.

He is reported to have died at Lucca on 18 March 588, the date on which his feast is kept. He was buried in a church that he had founded or restored, dedicated in early sources to Saints Vincent, Stephen, and Lawrence; that church subsequently bore his name. The present Romanesque Basilica of San Frediano, distinguished by a thirteenth-century mosaic façade, stands on the site and preserves his relics. For a time the church associated with him served as cathedral of Lucca before that dignity passed to San Martino. His cult is of the ancient, pre-congregation type: he was not the object of a later papal canonization process, but was commemorated in local liturgy and entered the martyrologies. He is the patron saint of Lucca. Apart from the death date transmitted by liturgical tradition, the outline of his life depends on hagiographical narratives rather than on a dense contemporary record, and historians treat the Irish princely story and the river miracle as legend rather than as strictly documented history.
