Biography

Short Description

Fridolin of Säckingen, also called Fridolin the Wanderer and traditionally the Apostle of the Alamanni, is a Christian saint of the early Middle Ages whose cult is centered on the Upper Rhine and the Swiss canton of Glarus. Almost everything told of his life derives from a Latin vita composed about 970-980 by Balther (Baltherus), a monk of Säckingen, rather than from contemporary documents. Balther presents Fridolin as an Irishman of noble birth who left Ireland as a peregrinus, a voluntary exile for Christ, and who preached in Frankish Gaul. The vita situates him in the reign of Clovis I, which would place his activity in the late fifth or early sixth century; modern historians treat that dating as a hagiographical convention and generally speak only of a sixth- or seventh-century mission. No source that meets ordinary historical standards records a year of birth or of death.

According to Balther, Fridolin worked for a time at Poitiers, where he recovered the relics of Saint Hilary of Poitiers. Hilary then appeared to him in a vision and directed him to an uninhabited island in the Rhine, on which he was to found a church. Fridolin is said to have obtained the island of Säckingen from the Frankish king and to have established there a monastic community that became Säckingen Abbey, later an important imperial house on the High Rhine. From that base he is credited with missionary work among the Alamanni, who inhabited the Upper Rhine region and were still only partly Christianized. The historical existence of an early medieval monastery at Säckingen is not in doubt, even though the details of its foundation cannot be verified independently of the tenth-century vita. Irish or other Insular peregrini were active on the Continent in this period, so an Insular origin for the founder remains plausible, but it rests on Balther’s narrative rather than on independent evidence.

The most famous episode in the legend concerns two brothers of Glarus, Ursus and Landolf. Ursus, a Christian, bequeathed property to Fridolin’s monastery; after Ursus died, his pagan brother Landolf refused to surrender the land. Fridolin is said to have brought Ursus from the tomb to testify before a judicial assembly, often located at Rankweil in what is now Vorarlberg, after which Landolf yielded. The story, a common type in early medieval miracle collections, became the saint’s distinctive iconography: he is shown as an abbot in habit, leading a skeleton or a risen corpse. It also underpins his later patronage of Glarus. The coat of arms of the Swiss canton of Glarus still depicts Fridolin with Ursus, and the legend was used in the Middle Ages to explain or defend monastic claims to land in that valley.

Fridolin’s feast is observed on 6 March. Relics associated with him have long been kept at the minster of Säckingen, the Fridolinsmünster in present-day Bad Säckingen in Baden-Württemberg. He is venerated as patron of Säckingen and of the Swiss canton and town of Glarus. He belongs to the era of pre-congregation saints: there was no papal canonization of the later medieval or modern kind, but a local cult was already well established when Balther wrote in the tenth century. Beyond the outline of an Insular missionary connected with a Rhine monastery and with the Christianization of Alamannic territory, the biographical particulars remain legendary, and precise dates for his birth and death are unknown.
