Biography

Short Description

Saint Fructuosus was bishop of Tarraco (present-day Tarragona) in the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis and is among the best-attested Christian martyrs of the third century. Nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, or early career; the surviving evidence concerns only his arrest and death in January 259, during the persecution launched by the emperor Valerian. In 257 Valerian had ordered that Christian clergy sacrifice to the Roman gods or face exile and confiscation; a harsher edict in 258 prescribed death for bishops, priests, and deacons who refused. Fructuosus and his deacons Augurius and Eulogius fell under this legislation. They were taken into custody on 16 January 259 by order of Aemilianus, the praeses of the province.

The chief narrative of their passion, the Passio Sanctorum Fructuosi Episcopi, Auguri et Eulogi, is widely regarded by historians as one of the more trustworthy Latin martyr acts of the period. It appears to incorporate official interrogation material and eyewitness recollection. After six days in prison, during which Fructuosus continued to instruct the faithful and even baptized a catechumen, the three were brought before Aemilianus on 21 January. The governor asked whether Fructuosus knew the emperors’ commands. The bishop answered that he knew them but worshipped only the one God who had made heaven and earth. Asked if he was bishop, he said, "I am." Aemilianus replied, "You were," and sentenced them to be burnt alive. Fructuosus asked only that the church of Tarraco be kept in God’s peace.

They were conducted to the amphitheatre. A Christian named Felix approached with a cup of spiced wine; Fructuosus declined it because the Friday fast had not yet ended. At the place of execution the martyrs were bound to the stake. As the fire consumed their bonds they knelt, stretched out their arms in the form of a cross, and remained in prayer until they expired. When the pyre had cooled, members of the community gathered the ashes and bones. The Passion recounts that Fructuosus afterwards appeared in visions, once to the governor Aemilianus and several times to Christians of Tarraco, confirming the dignity of the relics and the martyrs’ place in glory.

Veneration began at once in Hispania. In the late fourth or early fifth century the Spanish poet Prudentius celebrated the three martyrs in the sixth hymn of his Peristephanon, following the outline of the Passion closely. Augustine of Hippo preached on their feast, and their names were entered in the earliest Roman and Spanish martyrologies. The liturgical commemoration on 21 January was observed in the Roman rite and in the Mozarabic liturgy of Iberia. A basilica was erected in the Christian cemetery of Tarragona over the site associated with their burial; the Roman amphitheatre of the city, still standing, is traditionally identified as the place of their death. Relics have long been venerated in Tarragona Cathedral.

Fructuosus is honoured as principal patron of the city and of the Archdiocese of Tarragona. The Passion remains a primary source for the study of third-century Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula, for the working of Valerian’s edicts in a provincial capital, and for the earliest forms of the cult of the martyrs in the Latin West. Later legend did not substantially overlay the sober core of the third-century account, which continues to be treated as historically well founded.
