Biography

Short Description

Gabriel Ferretti was born in 1385 in Ancona, a major Adriatic seaport then counted among the territories of the Papal States, as a son of the noble Ferretti family, one of the leading houses of the city. From his youth he showed a strong inclination to prayer and to the Franciscan ideal of evangelical poverty. He entered the Order of Friars Minor in the Observant community of San Francesco ad Alto in Ancona, the reform branch that sought a stricter living of the Rule of Saint Francis. After his novitiate and studies he was ordained to the priesthood and became known as a preacher of unusual eloquence, traveling through the Marche and neighboring districts of central Italy to call hearers to repentance and a more devout Christian life.

Within the order he was given positions of trust. He served as guardian of several Observant convents and was elected provincial minister of the Franciscan province of the Marches, in which office he worked to consolidate regular discipline and to extend the Observant reform. He belonged to the same generation as James of the Marches and John of Capistrano, the great Observant preachers and organizers of fifteenth-century Italy, and he shared their commitment even though his own ministry remained rooted in his native region. His brethren regarded him as austere in personal life, patient in government, and already in his lifetime as a man of holiness whose counsel was sought by friars and by the laity.

Ferretti’s spiritual life was distinguished by a particular devotion to the Virgin Mary. Franciscan tradition holds that the Mother of God appeared to him and spoke with him, and that he received from her pledges of protection for the city of Ancona. In his own day he was credited with miraculous healings and other favors obtained through prayer, and similar reports continued at his tomb after his death. He spent his final years at San Francesco ad Alto, remaining a central figure for the Observant community in Ancona and a spiritual reference point for the city.

He died in Ancona on 12 November 1456 and was buried in the church of his convent. Veneration at his tomb arose in the following years and was maintained by the Franciscans and by the people of Ancona. On 9 September 1753 Pope Benedict XIV confirmed his cult, an act equivalent to beatification in the practice of the eighteenth century. He was never subsequently canonized. His feast is kept on 12 November, the day of his death. He is remembered as a local blessed of Ancona and as a representative figure of the Franciscan Observance in the fifteenth-century Marche.
