Biography

Short Description

Gabriel Lalemant was born in Paris in 1610 into a family already closely connected with the Jesuit missions of New France. Two uncles, Charles Lalemant and Jérôme Lalemant, served there as missionaries and superiors, and their example shaped his vocation. He entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Paris in 1630. After the usual course of studies and several years of teaching in Jesuit colleges in France, he was ordained a priest. For more than a decade he petitioned his superiors for assignment to Canada; the request was granted only in 1646, when he was already in his mid-thirties.

He reached Quebec in September 1646 and was first employed at the residence of Sillery and as procurator of the mission, handling supplies and correspondence rather than working directly among Indigenous nations. In the summer of 1648 his uncle Jérôme, then superior of the Huron mission, summoned him to Huronia. Lalemant came to the fortified Jesuit residence of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and was assigned to the nearby village mission of Saint-Louis, where he joined Jean de Brébeuf. He had only a few months in which to begin learning the Wendat language and to share in instruction and baptisms before the long war between the Huron and the Iroquois reached its climax.

On 16 March 1649 an Iroquois force overran Saint-Louis. Brébeuf and Lalemant were captured and taken to the already seized village of Saint-Ignace. There they were subjected to the ritual tortures inflicted on captured enemy warriors and, in this instance, on the French missionaries associated with the Huron. Contemporary Jesuit reports, drawing on the testimony of Huron escapees, record that Lalemant was forced to witness Brébeuf’s death on the afternoon of the 16th and that he himself was tortured through the night, dying on the morning of 17 March 1649. He was thirty-eight years old and had spent fewer than eight months in the Huron country.

French and Huron survivors recovered the bodies and buried them at Sainte-Marie. When the Jesuits and remaining Christian Hurons abandoned Huronia in 1650, the bones of Brébeuf and Lalemant were carried to Quebec and kept as relics. Devotion to the slain missionaries spread in New France and later in Canada and the United States. Gabriel Lalemant was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 21 June 1925 and canonized by the same pope on 29 June 1930 as one of the eight Canadian Martyrs, also known as the North American Martyrs. Their collective feast is observed on 19 October in the General Roman Calendar and on 26 September in Canada; they are honoured as secondary patrons of Canada. Relics associated with Lalemant are venerated at the Martyrs’ Shrine near Midland, Ontario, on the former Huron mission lands.
