Biography

Short Description

Gabriel of Athos, known in secular life as Georgy Ivanovich Chepurin, was a Russian Orthodox monastic founder of the nineteenth century. He was born on 8 January 1849 in the village of Bolshaya Znamenka in the Melitopol district of the Taurida Governorate of the Russian Empire. Of peasant origin, he felt a vocation to the monastic life and traveled to Mount Athos, where he joined the brotherhood of the Russian Monastery of Saint Panteleimon.

At Saint Panteleimon he received the monastic tonsure and the name Gabriel. He was later ordained to the holy priesthood and in time took the great schema, becoming a schema-archimandrite. Formed in the Athonite tradition of prayer, obedience, and communal labor, he was among those chosen when the monastery undertook a new foundation in the Caucasus.

In 1875 monks from Saint Panteleimon, with Gabriel in a leading capacity, established a monastery at the traditional site of the preaching of the apostle Simon the Canaanite on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia. The foundation, known as the New Athos Monastery of Saint Simon the Canaanite, received land and support from the Russian imperial authorities. As builder and first abbot, Gabriel oversaw the erection of churches, including a spacious katholikon, residential buildings, and the economic infrastructure needed to sustain a large community. He organized the liturgical cycle and monastic discipline according to the customs of Mount Athos, and the house became an important center of Orthodox life and pilgrimage in the region.

Gabriel died on 19 October 1901 at New Athos and was buried in the monastery he had founded. He is recalled as a zealous transplant of Athonite monasticism to the Caucasus and as a spiritual father of the New Athos brotherhood. Although the monastery was closed in the Soviet era, it was subsequently reopened, and local memory of Schema-Archimandrite Gabriel has persisted among the Orthodox faithful.
