Biography
Francesco Possenti, later known in religion as Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, was born on 1 March 1838 in Assisi, then in the Papal States. He was the eleventh of thirteen children of Sante Possenti, a lawyer in the papal civil administration who held successive governorships and similar posts, and Agnes Frisciotti. The family moved often with the father's appointments and eventually settled in Spoleto, where Francesco spent much of his youth. His mother died in 1842, when he was still a small child, and several siblings also died young. He was educated first by the Christian Brothers and then at the Jesuit college in Spoleto. As an adolescent he was remembered as lively, sociable, and somewhat worldly: fond of dancing, hunting, the theatre, and fashionable dress, and well known in local society.
Illness, family bereavement, and repeated brushes with death shaped his turn toward religious life. After recovering from serious sickness he more than once promised to enter religion, then delayed. In 1856, during a cholera outbreak in Spoleto and after the death of a sister, he experienced a decisive conversion in connection with a public procession of a venerated image of the Blessed Virgin. He resolved to join the Passionists, the congregation dedicated to the Passion of Christ and to Our Lady of Sorrows. Overcoming his father's resistance, he entered the Passionist novitiate at Morrovalle that same year and received the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. He made his religious profession in 1857.
Gabriel spent his brief religious life as a student and cleric in Passionist houses, including a final period at Isola del Gran Sasso in the Abruzzo. He was never ordained a priest. Those who lived with him described a cheerful, obedient young religious of intense interior devotion to the Passion and to the Sorrowful Mother. What survives of his writing consists mainly of letters and notes of a simple, fervent character rather than systematic theology. Tuberculosis advanced rapidly; he died at Isola del Gran Sasso on 27 February 1862, at the age of twenty-three, and was buried at the monastery there.
A popular cult grew quickly after his death, especially among the young. He was beatified by Pope Pius X on 31 May 1908 and canonized by Pope Benedict XV on 13 May 1920, who presented him as a model for youth. His feast is observed on 27 February. He is invoked as patron of students, youth, seminarians, and clerics, and of the region of Abruzzo. His relics are venerated at the large sanctuary later raised at Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia, which became a major pilgrimage centre.
