Biography

Short Description

Gabriel Taborin was born on 1 November 1799 in Belleydoux, a village in the Ain department of eastern France, in the Bugey country near the Jura, at a time when the Catholic Church in France was still recovering from the Revolution. He was raised in a practicing Catholic family and received a modest rural education. From an early age he was drawn to the instruction of children and to a life of religion. In the post-revolutionary countryside many parishes lacked teachers and regular catechesis, and as a young man he worked as a schoolmaster and catechist in local villages. He considered a priestly vocation but was never ordained; his path remained that of a lay religious dedicated to education rather than that of a cleric.

After seeking admission to the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and not being accepted, Taborin continued to teach in the villages of the region and gradually formed the idea of a new community of brothers. With the support of Bishop Devie of Belley he gathered companions who wished to combine religious consecration with the Christian education of boys, especially in rural and neglected places. In 1835 he founded the Congregation of the Brothers of the Holy Family of Belley, placing the institute under the patronage of the Holy Family of Nazareth. The brothers were to live the evangelical counsels as lay religious, to staff schools, to teach catechism, and to assist parish clergy as sacristans and helpers where priests were few. The model owed something to the older tradition of teaching brothers, adapted to the needs of Restoration and July Monarchy France.

Taborin served as the first superior of the young congregation and spent the rest of his life forming novices, opening schools in the diocese of Belley and neighboring districts, and seeking stable diocesan recognition. A new teaching institute in nineteenth-century France faced both opportunity and hardship: the demand for Catholic schooling was real, yet money was scarce, political conditions for religious congregations were sometimes uncertain, and internal discipline had to be built from nothing. He insisted on a simple, family-like community life and on the dignity of the brother’s vocation as distinct from the priesthood. During his lifetime the congregation took root in Belley and began a modest expansion, remaining a diocesan institute of teaching brothers rather than a clerical order.

He died in Belley on 24 November 1864. The Brothers of the Holy Family continued after his death and later established houses beyond France. His reputation for holiness led to a cause for beatification in the twentieth century. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 14 May 1995. The Catholic Church commemorates Blessed Gabriel Taborin on 24 November. He is remembered as a founder who helped restore Catholic education in rural eastern France and who gave lasting form to a congregation of teaching brothers devoted to the Holy Family.
