Biography

Short Description

Gabriel-Taurin Dufresse, also recorded as Jean-Gabriel-Taurin Dufresse, was a French Catholic missionary bishop and martyr of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was born on 8 December 1750 at Lezoux, in the Auvergne region of central France (now in the department of Puy-de-Dôme). After formation for the priesthood he joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris), a society of apostolic life that sent secular clergy to Asia. Ordained a priest, he was assigned to the China mission and reached the interior of the Qing empire in the 1770s. He was sent to Sichuan, where the society already served scattered Chinese Christian communities that had survived earlier suppressions of the faith.

For decades Dufresse worked as a missionary priest in Sichuan, traveling among villages, administering the sacraments, and forming catechists and native clergy, often in secret. Imperial law treated Christianity as a heterodox teaching, and edicts against missionaries and converts were enforced with uneven but sometimes severe rigor. He was imprisoned during a persecution in the 1780s before being able to resume his ministry. Toward the end of the eighteenth century he was named coadjutor to the vicar apostolic of Sichuan and was consecrated a bishop in China, with the titular see of Tabraca. He later succeeded as Vicar Apostolic of Sichuan, with pastoral charge of Catholics across a large and difficult inland territory. His episcopate coincided with the Jiaqing reign, when the court again tightened measures against Christianity.

In 1815 a new campaign of arrests struck the Sichuan mission. Dufresse was captured, tried, and condemned to death. On 14 September 1815 he was beheaded at Chengdu, the provincial capital. The authorities displayed his severed head as a public warning, a practice intended to deter others from the Christian religion. His execution formed part of a wider series of martyrdoms of European missionaries and Chinese Christians in that period. Accounts that reached Europe through the Paris Foreign Missions Society presented him as having faced death with composure and as having encouraged fellow prisoners in the faith.

The Catholic Church later recognized Dufresse as a martyr. Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 together with other martyrs associated with the China missions. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized him among the 120 Martyr Saints of China, a group that includes foreign missionaries as well as a large number of Chinese laypeople, catechists, and clergy who died for the faith between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. In the General Roman Calendar their collective feast is kept on 9 July; the anniversary of Dufresse’s death is 14 September. He is remembered in connection with the history of Catholicism in Sichuan and with the long missionary engagement of the Paris Foreign Missions Society in that province.
