Biography

Short Description

Gabriel Urgebadze, born Goderdzi Urgebadze on 26 August 1929 in Tbilisi in the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, is venerated as a saint of the Georgian Orthodox Church with the titles Confessor and Fool-for-Christ. His father, Vasili Urgebadze, was killed while Gabriel was still a young child, and he was brought up by his mother, Barbara, who herself later became a nun under the name Anna. Growing up amid official Soviet atheism, he nevertheless displayed a strong attraction to Christian practice from an early age, including building a small chapel in the family courtyard and seeking out churches at a time when such behavior could bring social and political risk.

After fulfilling his obligatory service in the Soviet army, he embraced monastic life and was tonsured in 1955, receiving the name Gabriel. He was later ordained a hieromonk. Monastic institutions in Georgia then operated under severe state control, and his early years as a monk were marked by poverty and the constraints of Khrushchev-era anti-religious campaigns. On 1 May 1965, during a public May Day gathering in Tbilisi, he set fire to a large portrait of Vladimir Lenin displayed on a government building and called on those present to worship Christ rather than political idols. He was beaten, arrested, and confined in a psychiatric hospital, a frequent Soviet means of neutralizing religious and political dissent. The incident became central to his later reputation as a confessor of the faith.

In subsequent decades he lived as a fool-for-Christ, a traditional Eastern Christian path in which apparent eccentricity, ragged poverty, and unpredictable public conduct are joined to prayer, rebuke of the powerful, and care for ordinary people. He spent his later years principally at the Samtavro Monastery in Mtskheta, occupying a modest cell or outbuilding rather than a conventional monastic residence. Believers came to him for confession, counsel, and blessing; accounts of spiritual discernment and healing circulated widely among Georgian Orthodox Christians, though such reports belong to hagiographical tradition. He died at Samtavro on 2 November 1995 and was buried at the monastery.

The Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church formally glorified him on 20 December 2012. His relics were subsequently uncovered at Samtavro, where they have been the object of large-scale popular veneration in Georgia and among Orthodox Christians abroad. He is commemorated on 2 November. His cult reflects both memory of Christian resistance under Soviet rule and the revival of public Orthodoxy in independent Georgia.
