Biography

Short Description

Gabriella Borgarino, known in religion as Sister Gabriella, was born Teresa Borgarino in 1880 in Boves, a town in the province of Cuneo in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. She grew up in a modest rural family in a strongly Catholic environment typical of late nineteenth-century Piedmont. Drawn to consecrated life, she entered the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, the congregation founded in seventeenth-century France by Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac for the service of the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, and received the religious name Gabriella.

As a Daughter of Charity she lived a hidden life of service in communities of her institute in northern Italy during the first half of the twentieth century. That period encompassed two world wars, economic hardship, and social upheaval in Italy, during which Vincentian sisters commonly staffed hospitals, schools, and works of charity among the needy. Sister Gabriella was remembered by contemporaries for humility, cheerfulness, obedience, and fidelity to ordinary duties performed with a spirit of faith, in keeping with the Vincentian charism of finding Christ in the person of the poor.

Her interior life combined the active apostolate with prayer, the sacraments, and trust in Divine Providence. Testimonies later collected for her cause described patience in suffering and a quiet, consistent charity toward the sick and those in need. She spent her final years in Turin, a historic center of Vincentian activity in Piedmont.

She died in 1949. In subsequent decades a reputation for holiness persisted among the Daughters of Charity and the local faithful. After the diocesan process, Pope Francis in 2021 authorized the decree on her heroic virtues, granting her the title of Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized. She remains a figure of devotion within the Vincentian family and in Piedmont as an example of ordinary holiness lived in daily service.
