Biography

Short Description

Galgano Guidotti was born in 1148 in Chiusdino, a hill town in the Sienese countryside of Tuscany, then under the Republic of Siena. He belonged to a family of the lesser nobility. Testimony gathered within a few years of his death names his father as Guido (or Guidotto) and his mother as Dionisia, who herself appeared as a witness in the inquiry into her son's life. In youth Galgano followed the career of a knight. The earliest accounts, shaped by those local witnesses, describe him as proud, quarrelsome, and given to the violence and display typical of the military class in twelfth-century Tuscany. The death of his father is said to have left him still more unrestrained.

According to the tradition recorded soon after his death, Galgano experienced visions of the Archangel Michael, who called him to abandon secular knighthood and serve God in solitude. One strand of the story has him still armed when his horse stopped or turned toward the wooded hill of Montesiepi, a short distance from Chiusdino. There, in the episode that became the emblem of his cult, he declared that it would be easier to put a sword into stone than to give up his former life; he then drove his sword into a rock, where the blade remained fixed and the hilt stood as a cross. He took the event as a sign, broke with knighthood, and settled on the hill as a hermit, living in a simple hut near the embedded sword. He was not a member of a religious order; the Cistercian community later associated with his name was founded only after his death.

Galgano spent his last years in austerity at Montesiepi. A small circle of followers is said to have gathered around him. He died in 1181, still a young man of about thirty-three; his liturgical feast is kept on 3 December, though some Italian notices also mention 30 November. His mother Dionisia and other local witnesses testified to his conversion, his manner of life, and wonders attributed to him. In 1185 Pope Lucius III formally canonized him, an unusually swift papal recognition for the period and one of the earlier examples of a centralized canonization process rather than a purely local cult. A circular chapel, the Rotonda di Montesiepi, was built over the sword in the stone, and Galgano was buried in connection with that shrine.

In the following decades Cistercian monks established the Abbey of San Galgano in the valley below the hermitage. The Gothic abbey later fell into ruin, but the Rotonda and the sword remain in place and have been examined in modern times; the weapon is consistent with a twelfth-century sword. Galgano's cult has always been local in character, centered on Chiusdino and the Sienese Maremma, of which he is patron. Later writers have noted a resemblance between his sword in the rock and the Arthurian sword in the stone, though the Tuscan episode is independently attested in late twelfth-century Italian sources connected with the canonization and need not be derived from the British legend. The ruined abbey and the circular chapel together form one of the most distinctive sacred landscapes of medieval Tuscany.
