Biography

Short Description

Saint Gallicanus, commemorated on 25 June in the Roman Martyrology, is a figure of early Christian tradition whose life is known almost entirely from later legendary sources rather than from contemporary historical records. He is presented as a Roman of high rank in the fourth century, a military commander and a man of consular dignity. Later writers have sometimes proposed an identification with Ovinius Gallicanus, urban prefect and consul in 317, who may have been among the earliest Christians to hold the consulship, or with a consul Gallicanus of 330. Neither identification can be demonstrated, and the year and place of his birth are unknown.

The narrative that became standard in medieval hagiography is contained in the Acts of Saints John and Paul, compositions of the fifth or sixth century that modern criticism treats as largely fictitious. In that story Gallicanus, still a pagan, served Constantine and sought to marry the emperor’s daughter, called Constantia in the text (a legendary recasting of Constantina). She, portrayed as a consecrated virgin, sent John and Paul with him on campaign. After a vow made in battle he accepted baptism. Returning to Italy he is said to have freed his slaves, given his property to the poor, and settled at Ostia, where he maintained a hospital for the sick and for pilgrims and lived in continence and charitable labour.

The same tradition states that under the emperor Julian he refused to take part in pagan sacrifice, was banished from Italy, and withdrew to Egypt. There, at Alexandria, he was put to the sword for remaining steadfast in the Christian faith. No independent fourth-century witness confirms the exile or the martyrdom, and the precise year of death is not recorded. The Roman Martyrology nevertheless retains the Alexandrian martyrdom in its notice for 25 June. Nothing reliable is known of a wife or children; the legendary Acts imply that after conversion he lived unmarried. He held no papal or patriarchal office and is not associated with a religious order.

His cult is that of an early martyr received into the martyrological tradition of Rome. It remained relatively modest in later centuries, and he is not prominently recorded as patron of particular cities, professions, or causes. Because the only connected biography belongs to a legendary cycle, a careful account must distinguish the outline preserved in liturgy and martyrology from the uncorroborated narrative details of the Acts.
