Biography

Short Description

Gamaliel, known in Jewish sources as Rabban Gamliel the Elder (Gamliel ha-Zaken), was a leading Pharisee sage and an authority in the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem during the first half of the first century CE. Rabbinic tradition identifies him as the son of Simeon ben Hillel and the grandson of Hillel the Elder, the renowned founder of the House of Hillel. He is the first of several descendants of Hillel to bear the honorific title Rabban, meaning our master, a designation associated with the nasi, or president, of the Sanhedrin. In that capacity he stood at the head of Jewish legal and religious life in Judea under Roman rule, in the decades before the First Jewish-Roman War and the destruction of the Second Temple.

The Mishnah and later rabbinic literature preserve a number of rulings associated with Gamaliel the Elder, which portray him as a jurist concerned with practical equity and with the welfare of ordinary people. He is credited with measures that eased the position of the poor, of women, and of non-Jews in certain legal contexts, among them regulations intended to protect a widow's right to remarry on the testimony of a single witness, and ordinances that took account of the needs of the wider population during pilgrimage festivals in Jerusalem. A well-known mishnaic statement records that when Rabban Gamaliel the Elder died, the glory of the Torah ceased, and purity and abstinence died, an indication of the esteem in which later generations of sages held him. His household and school in Jerusalem formed a central institution of Pharisaic learning.

Christian scripture also records Gamaliel as a figure of notable authority. The Acts of the Apostles presents him as a Pharisee and a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people who, in the Sanhedrin, advised caution toward the early followers of Jesus, arguing that a movement of merely human origin would collapse of itself, whereas a movement of divine origin could not be overthrown. The same book later identifies the apostle Paul as having been educated at the feet of Gamaliel in the ancestral law. These passages made Gamaliel a familiar name in Christian memory, even though they do not claim that he himself became a Christian.

Gamaliel died in the mid-first century, before the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE. Rabbinic tradition holds that he was succeeded as nasi by his son Simeon ben Gamliel, who was active during the war with Rome. A later Christian legend, which has no support in Jewish sources and is not accepted by modern historians as historical, claimed that Gamaliel secretly converted to Christianity, was baptized, and was buried together with Saint Stephen, Nicodemus, and a son named Abibas. In 415 a priest named Lucian, at Caphargamala in the region of Jerusalem, reported a vision that led to the purported discovery of their relics; the finding of Stephen's relics in particular was widely publicized in the late antique church. On the strength of this tradition Gamaliel came to be venerated as a saint in both Eastern and Western Christianity, with commemoration connected to the August feast of the finding of those relics.

Historically, Gamaliel remains best understood as a Jewish sage of the late Second Temple period, a Pharisee president of the Sanhedrin whose legal activity and reputation are attested independently in rabbinic literature and in the New Testament. The Christian cult that later grew around his name reflects the high regard in which the Acts of the Apostles held him, together with the fifth-century relic narrative, rather than any contemporary evidence of conversion. His descendants, including Gamaliel II and later Judah ha-Nasi, continued to lead the rabbinic movement after 70 CE and shaped the Mishnah and the Jewish patriarchate of Roman Palestine.
