Biography

Short Description

Gaudentius of Brescia (Gaudentius Brixiensis) was bishop of Brescia in northern Italy in the late fourth and early fifth centuries. Contemporary and near-contemporary sources present him as a native of Brescia, but they give no year of birth and almost nothing about his family. He was formed in the local church under Bishop Philastrius of Brescia, whom later tradition treats as his teacher, and was ordained to the priesthood. In the later fourth century he travelled in the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. He visited the Holy Land and spent time in Cappadocia, where he associated with leading Nicene churchmen and collected relics of Eastern martyrs, among them the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste.

While he was still abroad, Philastrius died and the clergy and people of Brescia elected Gaudentius bishop. He was unwilling to accept the see. Ambrose of Milan and other bishops of northern Italy overcame his resistance and consecrated him, an event usually placed around 387. As bishop he built and dedicated a basilica in Brescia called the Concilium Sanctorum (Council of the Saints), in which he enshrined the relics he had brought from the East. He was an active preacher. Twenty-one sermons, known as Tractatus, survive. Ten of them form a consecutive Easter-week catechesis addressed to the newly baptized, expounding the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the sacraments of initiation. Other sermons commemorate saints (including Philastrius), treat of the dedication of the basilica, and address pastoral and doctrinal themes. His theology is firmly Nicene; he opposes Arian and other heterodox views then current in northern Italy.

Gaudentius belonged to the circle of Western churchmen who supported John Chrysostom. After Chrysostom’s second deposition and exile in 404, Pope Innocent I and the Western court of Honorius sent an embassy of bishops, including Gaudentius, to Constantinople to plead for Chrysostom’s restoration before the Emperor Arcadius. The envoys were denied a proper hearing, detained, roughly handled, and compelled to return to Italy without success. Gaudentius later alluded to these hardships. He was also connected with Rufinus of Aquileia, who at Gaudentius’s request translated the Pseudo-Clementine Recognitiones into Latin and dedicated the work to him.

Gaudentius died at Brescia in the early fifth century; the date commonly given in the historical tradition is about 410. He was honoured as a saint in his own city from an early period. The Roman Martyrology records his feast on 25 October. His surviving sermons remain a principal source for the liturgy, baptismal catechesis, and cult of relics in the church of northern Italy at the turn of the fifth century.
