Biography

Short Description

Gaudentius of Novara (Italian: San Gaudenzio) is venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church and as the first bishop of Novara in Piedmont, in northern Italy. Almost everything that is told of his personal life depends on a later medieval vita rather than on contemporary fourth- or fifth-century documents, so many details remain traditional rather than strictly demonstrable. According to that account he was a native of Ivrea (the Roman Eporedia), born in the fourth century into a household that had not yet accepted Christianity. He came under the influence of Eusebius of Vercelli, the leading anti-Arian bishop of the region and an early organizer of a common life for clergy. Eusebius is said to have converted him, formed him in doctrine and ascetic practice, and ordained him priest. That association places Gaudentius in the generation that lived through the mid-fourth-century Arian struggle in northern Italy, including Eusebius’s exile after the Council of Milan in 355 and Eusebius’s death, generally dated to 371.

After the death of his master, tradition holds that Gaudentius left, or was forced from, the area of Vercelli and Ivrea amid lingering Arian pressure and found a field of work at Novara, then a modest Roman city on the road network of the Po valley. Toward the end of the fourth century, commonly around 397 or 398, he was chosen bishop of the Christian community there and is regarded as founder of the diocese. In that office he is credited with giving the church of Novara its first durable organization, opposing remaining Arian and pagan practice, and building the city’s earliest cathedral, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, on a site later occupied by the present Duomo. He is also associated with the spread of parish life into the surrounding Novarese countryside. Unlike Gaudentius of Brescia, his better-documented namesake and contemporary, he left no surviving sermons or treatises; his memory is that of a founding pastor rather than a theologian.

His episcopate fell in the decades after the Council of Constantinople (381) and during the consolidation of Nicene orthodoxy in Italy under Ambrose of Milan and Ambrose’s successors. Novara belonged to the ecclesiastical orbit of Milan. Traditional chronology assigns Gaudentius a rule of some twenty years. He is reported to have died at Novara on 22 January 418 (some older notices say 417). He was buried in the church he had constructed. In later centuries his relics were translated; they are now enshrined in the Basilica of San Gaudenzio, the large church begun in the sixteenth century and completed with its famous cupola in the seventeenth, which remains the principal monument of his cult and a landmark of the city.

Veneration of Gaudentius is of long standing. His name appears in early martyrologies on 22 January, which is his feast day in the Roman Martyrology and in the diocese of Novara. He is the patron saint of the city and of the Diocese of Novara. Independent contemporary evidence for the particulars of his biography is scarce, and historians treat the conversion story, miracle accounts, and many pastoral anecdotes as hagiographical elaboration of a later date. The core claim that a bishop named Gaudentius established the see of Novara at the turn of the fourth and fifth centuries, in the orbit of the churches of Vercelli and Milan, is nevertheless the accepted foundation story of that diocese and has shaped Novara’s religious identity from the early Middle Ages to the present.
