Biography

Short Description

Saint Gaudentius, bishop of Brescia, is the best-documented Latin churchman of that name from late antiquity. He lived in the later fourth and early fifth centuries in northern Italy. No reliable source records the year of his birth. Later Brescian tradition and the early notices of his life present him as a native of Brescia and as a disciple of Saint Philastrius, bishop of that city and author of a catalogue of heresies. While still a priest, Gaudentius left Italy for a prolonged pilgrimage. He visited Jerusalem and the holy places and spent time in the East, including among the churches of Cappadocia, where he obtained relics of saints that he later brought home. It was during this absence that Philastrius died. The clergy and people of Brescia then chose Gaudentius as bishop. A deputation found him in the East and pressed him to return; accounts of his life stress that he accepted the episcopate only under pressure and after the intervention of neighbouring bishops.

His consecration is associated with Saint Ambrose of Milan, the leading metropolitan figure of the region, and is generally placed in the later 380s. Once installed, Gaudentius governed the church of Brescia in the generation after the Council of Constantinople of 381 and during the last years of the Theodosian settlement in the West. He dedicated a basilica in Brescia under the title Concilium Sanctorum, the Assembly of the Saints, intended to house relics he had gathered on his travels. For that dedication and for ordinary liturgical occasions he preached a series of sermons. A collection of twenty-one tractates has been transmitted under his name. They treat Gospel pericopes, the dedication of the basilica, the praise of the saints whose relics were enshrined there, and the moral and doctrinal instruction of the faithful. The sermons are an important witness to relic cult, basilica dedication rites, and preaching style in a north Italian see at the turn of the fifth century. Gaudentius writes as a pastor formed by Scripture and by the rhetorical education of the late Roman elite.

In 405 and 406 he was drawn into the controversy over Saint John Chrysostom. After Chrysostom's second deposition and exile, Pope Innocent I and the emperor Honorius sent a Western embassy to Constantinople to seek a council and the restoration of the bishop of Constantinople. Gaudentius was one of the Italian bishops named to that mission. The envoys were denied a proper hearing, were detained and ill-treated, and returned without success. The failure of the embassy is recorded in the documents of the Chrysostom affair and in later ecclesiastical historians. It is the principal event that places Gaudentius on the wider stage of imperial church politics. His solidarity with Chrysostom is part of the traditional picture of his episcopate.

Neither the exact year of his death nor the precise place of his burial within Brescia is established by a contemporary inscription or chronicle entry that would settle later disputes. Many older liturgical and encyclopedic sources give a date around 410; some modern reconstructions, taking account of the embassy and of local tradition, have suggested a later date in the 420s. He was honoured as a saint in Brescia from an early period. The Roman Martyrology lists him on 25 October. No medieval papal bull of canonization is attached to his name; his cult is of the ancient, local, and liturgical kind typical of late antique bishops. He is not known to have held the see of Rome or any Eastern patriarchate, and he belonged to no later religious order. Details of family life, marriage, and children are not recorded in the surviving sources. His historical importance rests on the Brescian sermons, on his role in the Western response to Chrysostom's exile, and on his place in the Ambrosian orbit of north Italian bishops.
