Biography

Short Description

Geltrude Comensoli was born Caterina Comensoli on 18 January 1847 in Bienno, in Val Camonica in the province of Brescia, then part of the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia. She was the fifth of ten children of Bartolomeo Comensoli and Anna Maria Milesi, a household of modest means and strong Catholic practice. From childhood she was marked by devotion to the Eucharist and by a desire for consecrated life. After a simple rural education she sought to enter a convent of the Sisters of Charity while still young, but poor health forced her to leave. She then earned her living as a domestic servant and companion in various families, an experience that acquainted her with both material hardship and the lack of Christian education among poor girls in nineteenth-century Lombardy.

In the Bergamo area she made a private vow of chastity and developed a spirituality centered on adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. With the priest Francesco Spinelli, later himself canonized, and with diocesan encouragement, she founded in Bergamo in 1882 the Institute of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. The new community was dedicated to perpetual Eucharistic adoration together with the Christian education of girls, especially the poor. She took the religious name Geltrude. Severe financial difficulties connected with Spinelli’s family, and subsequent decisions of the Bishop of Bergamo, led to Spinelli’s departure. He later established a related congregation in the Cremona region, while Geltrude remained foundress and superior of the Sacramentine Sisters of Bergamo.

As mother of the Bergamo institute she formed a small, often impoverished community that combined hours of adoration before the Eucharist with schools and oratories for girls. She stressed humility, obedience, trust in providence, and a charity that did not separate contemplation from service. The congregation endured scarcity, misunderstanding, and her own recurring illness, yet gradually opened houses and obtained diocesan stability in the last years of her life.

She died in Bergamo on 18 February 1903. Her sisters and the local church kept her memory. After the canonical process, Pope John Paul II beatified her on 1 October 1989. Pope Benedict XVI canonized her on 26 April 2009 in Saint Peter’s Square. The Church commemorates her on 18 February. She is remembered as foundress of the Sacramentine Sisters of Bergamo and as a witness to Eucharistic devotion and the education of girls in late nineteenth-century northern Italy.
