Biography

Short Description

Saint Genesius, commonly called Genesius of Rome or Genesius the Actor (Latin: Genesius), is a Christian martyr whose cult developed in the city of Rome and who is widely venerated in the Catholic Church and also commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox tradition. The principal narrative of his life and death is contained in a Latin passio of relatively late date, which presents him as a popular comic actor and the director of a theatrical troupe active in Rome in the later third century, during the reign of the emperor Diocletian. According to this account, Genesius was engaged to perform before the imperial court a satirical play that mocked the Christian mysteries, in particular the rite of baptism. While impersonating a catechumen and going through a burlesque of the baptismal washing, he is said to have been interiorly converted, to have interrupted the performance, and to have declared himself a Christian. The emperor, depicted as present, ordered him to be tortured; Genesius persisted in his confession and was finally beheaded.

The historical value of this story is slight. The Acts are composed according to conventional hagiographic patterns and cannot be traced to a contemporary record. Scholars have long noted the close resemblance between the Roman legend and the earlier tradition of Saint Genesius of Arles, a notary of the chancery of Arles in Gaul, who refused to write down the edicts of persecution, cast away his tablets, fled from the city, and was captured and beheaded near the Rhône. The Arlesian martyr is mentioned in sources of the fifth century, including a sermon associated with Hilary of Arles, and his feast, like that of the Roman Genesius, is 25 August. It is widely held that the cult of the Gallic notary was transferred to Rome, or that an independent Roman martyr of the same name was later equipped with a theatrical conversion story that absorbed motifs from the Arlesian passio and from other actor-martyr legends. A historically verifiable actor named Genesius who suffered in Rome under Diocletian has not been established from independent third- or fourth-century evidence. Traditional dates of death such as 286 or 303 circulate in later martyrologies and popular notices but are not confirmed by reliable contemporary sources.

Despite these uncertainties, liturgical and popular veneration of Saint Genesius took root in Rome. A church or oratory dedicated to him is attested, and relics associated with his name were preserved at San Giovanni della Pigna and were later connected with the church of Santa Susanna on the Quirinal Hill. Medieval martyrologies, including the Roman Martyrology, entered him on 25 August. From the later Middle Ages and especially in the early modern period he was adopted as the special patron of actors, comedians, clowns, dancers, and musicians—professions that had often been regarded with moral suspicion by ecclesiastical writers. Because of the notarial background of the Arlesian namesake and because the Roman legend involved a public legal profession of faith, he also became patron of lawyers, attorneys, stenographers, secretaries, and printers. He is invoked by those suffering from epilepsy, by victims of torture, and by converts, particularly those who embrace Christianity after having opposed or ridiculed it.

Genesius was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the type that developed in the second millennium; like other ancient martyrs he was recognized as a saint through cult, martyrological inscription, and liturgical celebration. His feast remains 25 August in Roman martyrological tradition, though it is not a universal obligatory memorial in the current General Roman Calendar. In the modern era Catholic theatrical associations, including the Catholic Actors’ Guild, have placed themselves under his patronage, and churches and chapels in Europe and elsewhere continue to honor him as a heavenly protector of the stage. Other historical figures of the same name, including Genesius of Arles and later bishops such as Genesius of Lyon, are distinct persons whose cults and careers should not be conflated with the Roman actor-martyr of popular devotion.
