Biography

Short Description

Saint Gennady of Kostroma and Lyubimograd (Gennadius; in the world Gregory) is a monastic saint of the Russian Orthodox Church, remembered as founder and first igumen of the Savior-Transfiguration monastery later called the Spaso-Gennadiev Monastery. According to his traditional Life he was born in Mogilev, then in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, to a family of means. No reliable source preserves an exact year of birth; the hagiographical tradition places his origins in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. From youth he was drawn to prayer and withdrawal from the world. After the death of his parents he distributed his property and left his native city, traveling into Muscovite Russia in search of a monastic life.

He is said to have spent time in Moscow and in the Novgorod lands, living in poverty and, in some versions of the Life, in the guise of a fool-for-Christ. He eventually entered the monastery of Saint Alexander of Svir, where he received the monastic tonsure and the name Gennady. Formed in the austere northern Russian tradition, he later lived under the guidance of Saint Cornelius of Komel. With Cornelius’s blessing he withdrew into the forests of the Kostroma country, near the town of Lyubim (whence the epithet Lyubimogradsky).

There, in the first half of the sixteenth century, Gennady established a hermitage that grew into a monastery dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior. He became its first igumen. The Life describes him as a strict ascetic, given to fasting, vigil, and manual labor, and attributes to him gifts of spiritual discernment and healing. Disciples gathered around him, and the house became a center of monastic life in the Kostroma region in the reigns of Vasily III and Ivan IV. Beyond the hagiographical narrative and later liturgical texts, contemporary documentation of his career is sparse, as is common for northern Russian monastic founders of this period.

Gennady died on 23 January 1565 and was buried at the monastery he had founded. Local veneration began after his death. His relics were uncovered in 1646, and in the mid-seventeenth century the Russian Orthodox Church established church-wide commemoration. He is remembered on 23 January (the day of his repose) and on 19 May (the uncovering of the relics), dates given in the Julian calendar of the Russian liturgical tradition. The Spaso-Gennadiev Monastery remained the principal focus of his cult in the Kostroma land.
