Biography

Short Description

Genoveva Torres Morales was born on 3 January 1870 in Almenara, in the province of Castellón in eastern Spain, the youngest of six children of José Torres and Vicenta Morales. Her childhood was marked by repeated bereavement: by the age of eight she had lost her mother and four siblings, and her father died when she was still a young adolescent, leaving her an orphan who was taken in by a relative. In her early teens she developed a grave infection or tumor in her left leg; in 1885 the limb was amputated to the thigh, and she used crutches for the rest of her life. Those early losses and her lasting disability formed the background to a life of prayer and of practical concern for women who were poor, isolated, or without family support.

From 1885 she lived for about nine years at the Mercy Home (Casa de la Misericordia) in Valencia, administered by the Carmelite Sisters of Charity founded by Saint Joaquina de Vedruna. There she learned sewing and other skills and her religious vocation matured. She wished to enter that congregation but was not accepted because of her physical condition. After leaving the Mercy Home she supported herself as a seamstress in Valencia and began to gather other women who were poor or living alone, forming a small community of mutual help and Christian life. Her own experience of orphanhood, disability, and the vulnerability of women without a household shaped the apostolate she would later found.

In 1911, with the encouragement of Jesuit spiritual directors, she established the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Angels, whose members came to be known as the Angélicas. The institute was dedicated to the care of women in need, especially elderly women and those living in solitude, offering them a home, material assistance, and spiritual accompaniment. Communities were founded in several Spanish cities, and the congregation obtained ecclesiastical approval. Mother Genoveva governed it as superior general for decades, combining administrative responsibility with a reputation for humility, patience in suffering, and devotion to the Sacred Heart and to the holy angels. She resigned her office in the mid-1950s as her health declined.

She died in Zaragoza on 5 January 1956, two days after her eighty-sixth birthday. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 29 January 1995 and canonized her on 4 May 2003 in Madrid during an apostolic visit to Spain. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 5 January. She is remembered as a foundress who turned personal hardship into a charism of hospitality toward isolated and elderly women, and as a witness of perseverance for people living with physical disability.
