Biography

Short Description

Genuinus, also recorded in the sources as Ingenuinus or Ingenuin, was bishop of Säben (Latin Sabiona) in the late sixth and early seventh centuries. Säben occupied a mountain site above the Eisack (Isarco) valley, near present-day Klausen (Chiusa) in South Tyrol. In his lifetime the see belonged to the ecclesiastical orbit of Aquileia and lay within the Lombard kingdom of northern Italy. He is generally counted as the second historically attested bishop of Säben. A shadowy predecessor is sometimes identified with Saint Cassian of Säben, but Cassian’s status as a historical bishop is far less secure than Genuinus’s. Unlike many purely legendary founding bishops of Alpine dioceses, Genuinus appears in sources that historians treat as substantially reliable.

The chief early witness is the eighth-century historian Paul the Deacon, together with material connected to the Schism of the Three Chapters. After the Second Council of Constantinople in 553 condemned the writings known as the Three Chapters, a number of churches in northern Italy, Istria, and the Alpine territories, under the leadership of Aquileia, refused the condemnation and remained out of communion with Rome for decades. Bishops of that obedience met in synods to defend their position. Genuinus is associated with this controversy and is reported to have taken part in a synod at Marano, in the Venetian coastal region, around the end of the 580s or the beginning of the 590s. The episode places him among the prelates of the Aquileian party at a time when Lombard kings, residual Byzantine power, and papal policy were all in flux in northeastern Italy. No surviving contemporary text gives a connected biography, a physical description, or an account of his pastoral programme beyond this conciliar setting.

No reliable source preserves the year or place of his birth, the names of his parents, or the circumstances of his education and appointment. Later tradition assigns his death to about 605, but that figure is conventional rather than strictly documented from a contemporary obituary. He was buried at Säben. Toward the end of the tenth century, when the bishops had begun to reside more regularly at Brixen in the valley below, Bishop Albuin of Brixen—himself later venerated as a saint—translated Genuinus’s relics from the old mountain see to Brixen. The translation both honoured an early predecessor and helped confirm Brixen as the continuing seat of the same diocese. From that time the cult of Genuinus was joined to that of Albuin. Their veneration is of the ancient, pre-congregation type and does not rest on a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern kind.

Genuinus and Albuin are commemorated together on 5 February in the liturgy of the Diocese of Bolzano-Brixen, of which they are patrons. Genuinus is honoured as a confessor-bishop rather than as a martyr. Beyond his tenure at Säben, his involvement in the Three Chapters dispute, the later history of his relics, and this diocesan cult, almost nothing can be verified about his personal life. Claims of a precise birth year, a detailed passion, a monastic profession, a family, or an extensive list of additional patronages are not supported by reliable historical evidence. Local tradition at Asti in Piedmont has sometimes attached the name Genuinus to an early bishop of that see as well; that Asti figure, if distinct, remains largely legendary and should not be conflated with the historically attested bishop of Säben.
