Biography
Georg Häfner was born on 19 October 1900 in Würzburg, then in the Kingdom of Bavaria within the German Empire, the son of a postal official. He attended the Gymnasium in Würzburg and studied Catholic theology at the University of Würzburg. As a seminarian he entered the Third Order of Saint Francis and remained a Franciscan tertiary for the rest of his life, while serving as a diocesan priest rather than as a member of a religious institute. On 13 April 1924 he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Würzburg by Bishop Ferdinand von Schlör.
After ordination he served as a chaplain in Franconian parishes, including Sommerach and Rottendorf. In 1934 he was appointed parish priest of Oberschwarzach in Lower Franconia. There he became known for pastoral care of his parishioners and for a quiet but consistent refusal to accommodate National Socialist demands on church life. He declined the Hitler salute, resisted party interference in catechesis and youth work, and continued to preach in a manner that local officials regarded as politically unreliable. His loyalty to the Church and his Franciscan tertiary commitment placed him at odds with a regime that sought to subordinate every institution to its ideology.
On 31 October 1941 Häfner was arrested after being denounced in connection with remarks critical of the regime and with his pastoral activity. He was held in Würzburg prison and on 12 December 1941 transferred to the Dachau concentration camp, where he was given prisoner number 28876 and confined in the so-called priests’ barracks. Dachau held thousands of clergy under conditions of forced labor, starvation, disease, and systematic humiliation. Häfner’s health collapsed. He died in the camp on 20 August 1942 at the age of forty-one. The Catholic Church regards his death as martyrdom in odium fidei.
The diocesan inquiry into his cause was opened in Würzburg in the 1990s. After the Congregation for the Causes of Saints recognized his martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI authorized his beatification. The rite was celebrated on 15 May 2011 in Würzburg Cathedral by Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation, acting as papal legate. Häfner’s liturgical memorial is kept on 20 August, the anniversary of his death. He is remembered among the German priests imprisoned at Dachau who resisted National Socialism at the cost of their lives, and as a witness to priestly fidelity under totalitarian persecution.
