Biography

Short Description

George of Chqondidi, known in Georgian as Giorgi Chqondideli, was a Georgian Orthodox hierarch and royal minister active in the Kingdom of Georgia in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. He held the archbishopric of Chqondidi, a western Georgian see whose cathedral monastery stood in the region of Odishi (later Samegrelo), at the site of the present Martvili Monastery. No contemporary source preserves the year or place of his birth, the names of his parents, or the course of his early monastic life. He belongs to the generation that lived through the Great Turkish Invasion, when Seljuk raids in the 1080s devastated much of Georgia, and through the recovery organized by King David IV, called David the Builder, who reigned from 1089 to 1125.

Under David IV the archbishopric of Chqondidi was joined to the office of mtsignobartukhutsesi, chief of the royal chancellery, so that one prelate served as both senior bishop and principal minister of state. George was the outstanding early holder of this combined dignity of Chqondideli-Mtsignobartukhutsesi, which made him the king’s closest ecclesiastical and administrative collaborator and, after the monarch himself, one of the most powerful men in the realm. Georgian historical tradition presents him as a counsellor and mentor to David. In that capacity he stood at the centre of the king’s effort to rebuild royal authority, reduce the autonomy of the great nobles, and bring the church into closer alignment with the crown after decades of invasion and internal disorder. As an Orthodox bishop he was drawn from the monastic clergy and lived under the discipline of celibacy.

The church council of Ruisi-Urbnisi, held in 1103, was the principal instrument of that ecclesiastical policy. Meeting under royal presidency at two cathedrals in inner Georgia, the council adopted canons that required higher moral and educational standards of bishops and priests, limited the role of aristocratic clans in episcopal elections, and asserted the king’s right to oversee the church. As archbishop of Chqondidi and chancellor, George was among the leading hierarchs who supported and implemented these decisions. The council formed part of a wider programme that included the refounding of monasteries, the patronage of learning, and the reorganization of dioceses, all aimed at restoring the Georgian Church as a partner of a resurgent Christian monarchy.

George also took part in the political and military undertakings of David’s middle years, including the king’s search for new sources of manpower. Around 1118 David negotiated the settlement in Georgia of large numbers of Qipchaq (Kipchak) nomads, who were to serve as a royal army independent of the old feudal levies. Chronicle tradition, above all the narrative known as the Life of the King of Kings David, associates George with the court at this period and records that he died in 1118. The exact place of his death and the site of his burial are not named in the surviving accounts. The dual office he had occupied did not lapse: it remained a cornerstone of Georgian government through the twelfth-century golden age. The Georgian Orthodox Church numbers George of Chqondidi among its saints, honouring him as a bishop who served both altar and kingdom at a turning point in the country’s medieval history. A specific feast day, a formal act of canonization by a named synod or hierarch, and any particular patronages attached to his cult are not clearly documented in the standard historical literature.
