Biography

Short Description

George the Hagiorite, known in Georgian as Giorgi Mtatsmindeli or Giorgi Atoneli and also called George of Athos or George the Athonite, was an eleventh-century Georgian monk, theologian, hagiographer, translator, and calligrapher. He was born in 1009 in Trialeti, a province of the Kingdom of Georgia, to a family of the local nobility; the principal medieval life of the saint names his parents Iakob and Mariam. As a youth he was sent to Constantinople, where he spent a prolonged period of study and acquired a thorough command of Greek, scripture, and theology. After returning to Georgia he took monastic vows at Khakhuli Monastery in the Tao-Klarjeti lands. He later made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and lived for a time among Georgian monks on the Black Mountain near Antioch, then a major Caucasian monastic centre in the Levant, before going on to Mount Athos.

On Athos he joined Iviron, the Georgian monastery founded in the late tenth century by John the Iberian and Euthymius the Athonite. George became hegumen of Iviron in the mid-eleventh century and governed the house for about a decade. As abbot he worked to maintain the monastery’s Georgian character and discipline at a time when Byzantine authorities sometimes pressed Athonite communities toward greater Hellenization. He continued and expanded the translation programme associated with Iviron, rendering into Georgian liturgical books, a recension of the Great Synaxarion, homiletic and ascetic works, and revised biblical texts. He also composed a Life of John and Euthymius, which remains a principal source for the origins of Iviron and for Georgian activity on Athos. His versions helped to refine ecclesiastical Georgian and made Byzantine theological literature more fully available in the Caucasus.

After laying down the abbacy, George accepted an invitation from King Bagrat IV and travelled to Georgia, where he was received with honour, advised the court and hierarchy on church questions, and took part in deliberations connected with the catholicosate; he himself refused elevation to high episcopal office. He then went to Constantinople to represent Georgian monastic and ecclesiastical interests before the imperial government. He died in Constantinople on 27 June 1065. His remains were taken to Mount Athos and buried at Iviron.

George is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, especially by the Georgian Orthodox Church, which commemorates him on 27 June. His biography was written soon after his death by his disciple George the Lesser (Giorgi Mtsire). Together with Euthymius the Athonite he stands as a central figure of the Georgian Athonite literary school, and his translations and original writings had a lasting influence on medieval Georgian religious culture and on the autocephalous traditions of the Georgian Church.
