Biography

Short Description

Gerard of Toul (also known as Saint Gerard; French Gérard, German Gerhard) was a tenth-century bishop of Toul in Upper Lotharingia, on the western edge of the German kingdom. He was born in Cologne, according to the medieval tradition, into a family of the local nobility, about the year 935. Orphaned while still young, he was raised by relatives and given a careful education, with particular attention to Sacred Scripture and to liturgical music. He joined the clergy of Cologne and lived among the cathedral canons, where he was already noted for piety and learning, and was ordained priest. After the death of Bishop Gauzelin of Toul in 962, Gerard was chosen for that see. Near-contemporary tradition associates the appointment with the Ottonian court and with Archbishop Bruno of Cologne, brother of Emperor Otto I. Gerard was consecrated bishop in 963 and governed the Church of Toul for more than thirty years, until his death in 994.

As bishop he worked to restore ecclesiastical discipline and to rebuild a diocese that had suffered from the political and military disorders of the ninth and early tenth centuries. He is credited with restoring or reforming several monastic houses, among them the abbeys of Saint-Èvre (Saint-Epvre) and Saint-Mansuy near Toul, and with encouraging a more regular common life among the cathedral clergy. He cared for the fabric of the cathedral of Toul, which tradition says had been damaged by fire, and he obtained from the Ottonian emperors confirmations of the rights and possessions of his church. Gerard also established charitable works for the poor and the sick and was remembered as an almsgiver who used both his personal means and episcopal revenues for the relief of the needy. He remained a figure of some standing in the Ottonian church and is described as a counselor within that imperial world.

A distinctive feature of his episcopate, recorded in the eleventh-century Vita written by Widric (Widricus), abbot of Saint-Èvre, was his effort to enrich the liturgical and intellectual life of Toul by drawing monks and clerks from abroad, including Irish (Scotti) and Greek monks. He promoted the cathedral school and the solemn celebration of the Divine Office. The same hagiographical tradition portrays him as an austere and humble prelate, given to fasting and prayer, who nevertheless maintained the public dignity of his office. Miracles of healing were attributed to him both in life and at his tomb. The Vita of Widric, composed in connection with the later elevation of his relics, is the principal narrative source for his career; later medieval and early modern accounts depend heavily upon it and should be read with the usual caution due to saint’s lives of that period.

Gerard died at Toul on 23 April 994 and was buried in his cathedral. A local cult grew in the decades after his death. Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg, who served as bishop of Toul before his election as Pope Leo IX, promoted Gerard’s memory. In 1050 Leo IX formally recognized his sanctity and arranged the elevation of his relics, an act that later tradition treats as his canonization. Saint Gerard’s feast is kept on 23 April. He has long been venerated as the principal patron of the city and of the former diocese of Toul, in what is now northeastern France (the see was later united with Nancy).
