Biography

Short Description

Gerasimus of Vologda (Russian: Герасим Вологодский; also Gerasim Vologodskii) was a monk of the Russian Orthodox Church venerated as a prepodobnyi (venerable monastic saint) and wonderworker, and in later civic and ecclesiastical tradition regarded as the founder of the city of Vologda in the Russian North. The date and place of his birth are unknown, and no twelfth-century chronicle names him. The principal narrative source is a Life composed in 1666 by Thomas, a monk of the Trinity-Gerasimov Monastery, who stated that he worked from older local notes that had suffered damage. According to that Life, Gerasimus received the monastic tonsure at the Kiev Caves Monastery, the leading house of Kievan Rus', and in 1147 travelled north into the forested watershed of the Vologda River. Church and municipal tradition treat 1147 as both the year of his arrival and the foundation date of Vologda, although that year does not appear as a Vologda entry in the principal twelfth-century chronicles.

The hagiography relates that he settled a short distance from a modest riverside trading hamlet, at the Kaysarov stream (Kaisarov ruchei). There he built a cell and later a wooden church dedicated to the Holy and Life-Giving Trinity. A small community of monks gathered around the church, forming the house afterward called the Trinity Monastery on the Kaysarov, or Trinity-Gerasimov Monastery. He is described as leading a severely ascetic life, combining eremitical solitude with spiritual care for the scattered inhabitants of the district. Miracles of healing and protection are attributed to him in these later accounts. None of these details can be confirmed from contemporary documents; they represent the pious memory of a local founder-saint as it stood in the seventeenth century.

Tradition gives his death as 4 March 1178 and states that he was buried in the Trinity church he had founded. Veneration at his tomb developed in the later medieval and early modern periods, and he came to be honored as the heavenly patron of Vologda. The monastery remained a modest northern house until it was abolished in the late eighteenth century during the secularization of monastic lands in the Russian Empire, after which the Trinity church continued as a parish church and the centre of his cult. His relics were long associated with that church. In the liturgical calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church his principal feast is 4 March (Julian calendar; 17 March in the Gregorian civil calendar). He is also commemorated in the Synaxis of the Saints of Vologda, kept on the third Sunday after Pentecost, and in the Synaxis of the Saints of Kiev.

Modern historians have noted the late date of the written Life and the silence of the early chronicles, and some have questioned whether a historical Gerasimus can be placed securely in the mid-twelfth century or whether the biography absorbed later legendary features. The Russian Orthodox Church has nonetheless retained his cult in Vologda, and the traditional pairing of his coming with the year 1147 remains part of the city’s historical identity. He is remembered as an early representative of Kievan monastic settlement in the Russian North and as the city’s heavenly patron.
