Biography

Short Description

The historical identity of Gerasimo di San Lorenzo cannot be established with confidence from the principal hagiographical and biographical repertoires available to critical scholarship. The personal name Gerasimo is the Italian rendering of the Greek Gerasimos, a name of late antique Christian origin associated with several well-documented saints and hierarchs of the Eastern churches. The qualifier di San Lorenzo is a typical Italian toponymic or titular phrase, ordinarily indicating either birth or long residence in a place dedicated to Saint Lawrence or membership in a monastery, priory, or church of that title. Such designations are common in medieval and early modern Italian necrologies, monastic chronicles, and local calendars, but they do not by themselves yield a unique identification.

No entry corresponding securely to this form of the name appears in the Bollandist Acta Sanctorum in a manner that would permit assignment of a birth year, death year, or precise geographical origin. Likewise, standard modern dictionaries of saints and the more widely cited volumes of the Bibliotheca Sanctorum do not furnish a vita that can be matched without conjecture to Gerasimo di San Lorenzo. In consequence, fields that require a verified year of birth, a documented place of death, or an attested religious order are left unassigned. It would be methodologically unsound to substitute the floruit of a better-known Gerasimus, such as the fifth-century abbot of the Jordan or the sixteenth-century wonderworker of Cephalonia, for the subject of this notice.

Italian local tradition has at times preserved the memory of monks, hermits, and confessors attached to houses named San Lorenzo whose cult never received a full critical dossier or papal recognition at the universal level. If Gerasimo belongs to that category of locally remembered religious, the evidence for a public liturgical feast, for formal beatification or canonization, and for specific patronages has not been verified from sources that can be cited with certainty. No source consulted confirms that he held the see of Rome or a patriarchal throne, nor that he was married or had children; monastic or clerical status, if it existed, remains unproven rather than assumed.

The present biographical sketch therefore confines itself to what can be stated without invention: that the name situates the subject in an Italian or Italo-Greek Christian milieu and suggests a possible link to a community or locality under the patronage of Saint Lawrence, while chronological, familial, and institutional particulars remain unknown pending the identification of a primary source or a critical hagiographical study devoted to this specific figure.
